|
|
Welcome to the Airfix Seaplane Group Build, for which I am group build leader. This is the "Chat" thread for the GB and any reference material should be posted in the Reference Section.
Any military aircraft kit in the Airfix range may be built for this Group Build, provided that the subject depicted could land/take off from water. This could be a kit of a seaplane or flying boat (e.g. Sunderland, Catalina, Arado Ar196), a standard aircraft with a seaplane option (e.g. Junkers Ju52, DH Beaver), or a conversion of a kit that currently has no seaplane option.
If you wish to take part in the Group Build, you must sign up using the Usergroups link at the top of the screen (above the Log in/Log out link).
Important: Do NOT sign up as a participant of a Group Build if you only want to view the threads!
To take part in the Group Build:
Click on "Usergroups"
In the "Join a Group" section, select "Group Build - Airfix Seaplanes"
Click "View Information"
Click on "Join Group".
The Group Build leader will then approve your membership and you will be able to vote in the poll taking place here. _________________ Cheers,

A quick reminder of the Airfix kits which could be built OOB for this:
Short Sunderland III
Grumman J2F-6 Duck
Vought Kingfisher
Supermarine Walrus
Arado Ar 196
Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina
Supermarine S6B
Anyone know of any others? _________________ Cheers,

JU52 and the DHC Beaver, although I am not sure if the floatplane option was included in the latest boxing of this

What's the score with kit-bashes?
I wonder what a Fairey Fulmar floatplane might have looked like?
Just a thought, all the best

Does anybody know if the Airfix Swordfish has the float plane option inside ?
I built a Frog / Novo Swordfish float plane over twenty years ago and this had options for both wheeled and float versions.
just wondering if the Airfix version is the old Frog mould ? |

No, regrettably the Airfix mould is the Airfix mould and float-free. I would imagine that it would be OK to add the Frog floats to the Airfix Swordfish.....TBH I probably wouldn't bother though!
I understand that a Frog/Matchbox kitbash is one of the better ways to build an accurate 1/72 Stringbag.
All the best |

No problem with that from me - just so long as it doesn't involve an Anson _________________ Cheers,

Thanks guys, If I remember correctly the Novo Swordfish when constructed collapsed under its own weight as the support struts for the floats were not strong enough like the other Novo kits I built during that year (Lynx, Harrier, Magister) it wasn't long till they fell off the shelf into the bin |

If Kitbashing is permitted how about the Hawker Hurricane on floats ? Floats from the Blackburn Shark are evidently the right ones to use. For the kit the Hawker Hurricane Mk1/MkII
Local LMS has a number of JU52s available $25.00 AU. |

Seen a photo of them attached to a Hurri centre-section, that would certainly make an interesting build.
Any of the Spitfire floatplanes would be applicable too.
If I have time after the Walrus I might give a Spit I some floats as 'The Narvik Nightmare' _________________ Bubbly! |

I'll almost certainly do the Sunderland and Catalina concurrently. I am as yet undecided whether to build both roughly OOB, or to do a little mucking about. I am eyeing up all-black colourschemes for both, with an RAAF 'Black Cat' Catalina and a one-off 230 Squadron MkIII Sunderland with SEAC roundels which looks a little different to the norm. The latter would involve 'stickleback' radar aerials though. Unfortunately there's no simple aftermarket decal options.
Thoughts, suggestions?
BTW the floats used on the Hurricane were I believe the same ones that had been tested on a Blackburn Roc - indeed, slightly modified Shark floats. The float-equipped Roc - there was a hideous and almost completely useless aircraft... |

Random thought, but looking at the Grumman Duck and the Kingfisher I'm reminded of the Dufflepods from CS Lewis' "Voyage of the Dawn Treader". I know, thank goodness it's Friday!
Did the British ever come up with something similar, or were we more involved in the large, multi-engine Empire type flying boats. Having more lakes and islands in the US a small type flying boat would be more practical I suppose. Whereas the UK is a relatively small island with few large lakes or bodies of water, but there are plenty of land based airstrips in range of the coast. Long range flying boats would be more useful for reaching the far flung remote outposts of the colonies with no airstrips etc.
