I will be doing the Grumman J2F-6 Duck for my build, which was my prize from the charity raffle courtesy of Eduard Boessenkool.

I will be doing the OA-12 Duck, 10th Rescue Squadron, USAF Elmendorf, Alaska 1948 scheme. This is a combination of silver/red and dark blue, which should be quite striking.

I also didn't fancy painting all the scalloping on the wing leading edges of the other scheme

The plastic is typical Airfix, plenty of raised rivet detail. Theres not too much flash and just a few sink marks here and there. I'll be using the crew figures to busy up the rather sparse cockpit interior.

Is one of the crew missing his legs?

Yes, the gunner is legless, so much for the 24 hour bottle to throttle rule

Made a start, first step was sanding down all the surfaces to remove most of the rivets and raised detail.

I then cut out the radiator grill, as this joins in the middle and will be impossible to get a good finish on. I'll put some plastic card behind it and then add a new grill from plastic card.

I've assembled the office and engine and made a start on painting the pilots. Dipped the canopies into future. Wing floats need some work.

Painted up the interior, attached the side windows with epoxy and added the cockpit at the same time. I've also glued the blanking card onto the interior of the radiator.

The pilots have been painted up (did I mention I'm useless with figures!), but should be OK to liven the sparse interior up.

Coming along nicely Rich, if you feel like it , give the figures a wash over with a very, very thinned down dark brown, an easy way to pick out some detail.

Cheers

A trick I find works well with these rather basic pilots is to paint 'em black first, use one colour at a time and block paint the figure section by section:

Restore the black edges around each block of colour and move on to a new area.  Repeat until everything has been filled and then finish off with any details or drybrushing, a coat of Klear and a dark brown oil wash:

This technique gives quite a dramatic effect, which while rather OTT for highly visible figures, works quite well for figures that will be visible under canopies.

I'm probably going to try detailing pilots in the future, as my wish for a range of pre-painted pilot figures in 1/72 scale is unlikely to be fulfilled! I'll give the techniques suggested a try.

Meanwhile I got the fuselage halves together and the tailplanes and lower wings on. The seams were pretty good, only a bit of filing and the odd bit of filler here and there.

There is a bit of filling to do at the wing join and the tailplanes, but nothing major.

Joins all sanded down well. I epoxied the canopy in place as this needs some work with filler to blend it into the fuselage, particualrily at the front and rear where the fuselage seams are.

I added the slats to the radiator (just noticed one is a bit short ), and glued the engine in place.

Well I've sanded down the cockpit OK. Then attempted to attach the upper wing, where it all went a bit Pete Tong.

I attached the lower wings to the fuselage first to allow me to fill the joint, what I didn't appreciate is that the wings are not 90 degrees perpendicular to the fuselage but have a dihedral of a few degrees, ie they cant upwards. There are no dihedrals given in the instructions and it's not really apparent on the reference photos I have.

This means that the wing struts on mine don't meet the upper wing. So either I take the lower wings off and start again, scratch wing struts, or cut down the cabin struts and thereby lower the whole top wing.

I went for the third option as I'd run out of patience, hopefully it shouldn't be too obvious on the finished model.

Plenty of tape to hold everything in place, as there's a bit of tension involved.

So my advice to others is to fit the top wing first, then then the lower wing and struts, this should give the correct dihedral to the lower wing. Filling shouldn't be too complicated as the fuselage join is pretty accesible.

There you go, you live and learn!

Well everything is on and construction is finished. I filled the holes for the bomb racks as I decided to leave them off. The tail wheel and arrester hook will be added after painting.

I've washed the whole thing and it's drying in prep for the primer coat.
