Welcome
The Airfix Tribute Forum was set up for the discussion of Airfix models and other related subjects. Established April 2006.
Airfix 1/72 Yak 9D (010340)
Another old Airfix fighter!

Airfix 1/72 Yak 9D (010340)
Great build there
Airfix 1/72 Yak 9D (010340)
Lovely clean sharp job as always.

That is a beautifully built kit, which I think should be back in the shops this year. Will have to get one.

Nice work. Very bright and a clean

Lovely build Brian!!

Think I'm definately going to get one of these when Airfix re-release it later in the year.

I do think that this kit deserves to be in the Airfix lineup as a vintage re-release for as long as the mould holds out. It's reasonably accurate, IIRC, and there are some who still think that you waste time making a cockpit when you can just paint it all black because you can't see anything in there anyway. As for the lack of wheel well detail, you have a pilot - so make it with wheels retracted and you have a typical Russian straight-tapered wing fighter. Easy build, pleasant lines.

Nicely-done, Brian. I remember mine from the mid-70s which had the same markings, but was definitely not painted so well! I have two of these in the stash, one which is loose in a bag that will get built, and one in a Blister Pack which I have for display on a wall.

a beautifully made classic, gotta get the re-issue
Airfix 1/72 Yak 9D (010340)
I always solve the wheel well cockpit issue with a strip of foil- all my models sit on the shelf almost all the time anyway so it really makes no difference to me!

Also Brian, are these the correct colour call outs? I'm no expert but it's very different to most other Russian WWII schemes-  where was the aircraft based?
Airfix 1/72 Yak 9D (010340)
The colour call outs were the equivilant of H83 Ochre and H30 Dark Green and H65 Light Blue. Looking at the IMS Stockholm site the colours arn't close enough. Humbrol used to do Russian colours but have been discontinued for a while now.

The IPMS site also suggests different colours depending on year and aircraft type. Here's the IPMS colours..

In the end I went for H83 Ochre and H3 Gloss Brunswick green with some matt varnish over the top to look a little like this...

Thanks for the comments!

Well done!

Looking forward to getting the kit when Airfix re releases it.

Excellent work BAC, lovely sharp paint job!
Airfix 1/72 Yak 9D (010340)
Here's mine, which I bought from ColinM. It was a bit of an "every thing that could have gone wrong" build. I put the exhausts on the wrong way round, the decals I pinched from an eastern express kit managed to silver even on a wet layer of Klear & I picked the canopy up with red paint on my fingers!
Not my best, but not down to the kit, which is actually quite nice. There are much more inspring schemes than the Dark Earth & Green provided in the header though, I'd recommend a look at wings palette before building this.

Great camos guys does the old kit justice well done!!!
Airfix 1/72 Yak 9D (010340)
My version of the Yakovlev 9, from the latest Airfix starter kit. I have to say it was one of the worst kits I have ever built. I know it is an old kit but compared to say the spitfire IX it was ill fitting and poorly moulded:

Fine model and photography.

Top drawer. My Yak was yuk!

they are some fine builds troops, well done.

I have never even heard of the aircraft before    but looking at these, i'm a gonna get me one of those.
