There must be an almost endless variety of colours and markings for the Dakota. The Italeri kit comes with these unusually smart ones, compared, that is, to the more usual olive drab. I do have quite a soft spot for Italeri kits.

Here's a more usual Olive Drab one

It would be good to see a full shoot of the olive one.
There must be a mass of spare wheels out there that I would sometimes die for when building vacforms. |

| Thanks - I just can't make up my mind about the sight of a civillian aircraft with rather fetching lines to show off (my opinion of the Dakota), all dressed in drab. But there was a war on, so what can one expect. |

ESCI released their C-47 as Monty's Dak in silver, plus 'Camel Caravan to Berlin', subsequently repeated by the Revell re-box of the Italeri kit. Then there is the wonderful ESCI R4D 'Que Sera Sera' in silver, white and dayglo. No shortage of colourful military Gooney Birds if you look around.

This is a "plain Jane" OD Dak in 1942-3 markings. I think variations in paint color due to fading, repairs, doped fabric areas, weathering, oil spatters, etc.; and details particular to a specific aircraft (like the curious greenish tail fins of Douglas aircraft such as the C-47 and the B-17s they built under contract), are a good idea to incorporate in "one-color" camo surfaces to keep the eye busy and engaged, and give a boost to a "scale" impression.

| Lovely job on the Dak with some great close up shots. I keep trying the spinning effect with the props but never quite get it right. What's your technique (presumably a tool rather than actually spinning)? |

Gerry,
The prop is actually spinning in those pics. I inserted a short piece of 1/16" brass tube into the hole in the engine where the prop shaft goes, and replaced the prop shaft with a piece of 1/32" plastic rod, which slides nicely into the brass tube, and allows the prop to spin freely. A can of compressed air for dusting off electronics and photo materials from an office supply store is used to spin the prop.

| Ah - thanks for the explanation. It least it gives me something to work on in PaintshopPro - though a circle or elipse with some highly translucent yellow that progressively fades might be a bit much. The brass tube and rod sounds easier and more effective! |

Excellent work there, i think i may prefer the non olive drab one which i have never seen before
Cheers

One I built about fifteen years ago . . .
A nice kit, but that turned-up nose rather spoils it. When I get around to building some more of them, I'll invest in a few tubes of Milliput and beef up the undersides a bit. If you're not sure what I mean, compare the nose shape with that of the Doyusha 1/100 scale Dak in the background of this last photo . . .
Of course, Trumpeter may come to the rescue by down-sizing their new 1/48 kit . . . I hope! |

| Great job as always, with supporting truck and figures for realism. |

| Excellent work. Love the figures and trucks, it adds to the realism |

This is mine (actually the Airfix reboxing of the Italeri kit) Not quite finished though but I don't know when I can get to it to do that.

I can not deny it. I’m over the moon with the way this model turned out. Seeing as I'm still finding my feet at modeling. A D-Day USAAF stripey Dak. A good model that went together very well, so much so I got other sets of decals and got another kit because I like the Dak so much
Even got a vid link for you
