I've found an old tin of airgun pellets that I think will be ideal for use as nose weight.
What is the recommended glue for sticking them in - poly, super or PVA?
Thanks |

hi komet.
i would go for pva. poly risks distorting the stucture.
cyano risks misting of any clear parts.
or maybe use blue tac.

i use CA - by the time the clear parts go on the vapours from the glue have dissipated - so there is no problem with fogging.
However Ivan's suggestions are fine. poly cement would soften the plastic without bonding the weights so is not an option |

PVA
Epoxy
Superglue
Milliput
Best

| I would use PVA to glue them in. It wouldn't react with the model |

| Thanks for all the replies - going to give PVA a try. |

I always wrap my weight in Blu tac.

I use CA personally. Like Walrus said, by the time you come to add any clear parts the vapour has long gone, plus it's extremely strong so over time you shouldn't here the rattling of loose nose weight when you move the model in years to come.
Also if you coat clear parts in Klear then the vapours from CA shouldn't fog them up. |

| I have never considered using glue of any sort to fix lead weight in the nose of anything. I cut up pieces of lead tyre balances I scavange from the floor of my local car tyre repair centre using a garden cutter (it has the sharpness and the force to cut through lead), then pack the pieces in with a tube of B&Q household filler. The filler adds extra weight and can be forced into any space. When it sets, it sets rock hard - not even a risk of fogging. |

| Lead tyre balances sound a good idea, I might have to see if I can get my hands on some of those |

Tried getting some tyre weights from my local tyre fitters. Gave me, FOC, a strip of stick-on weights. Trouble is they're zinc as lead is now outlawed by Elf & Stacey. Let me tell you that zinc weights are b hard and distinctly non-malleable. Couldn't let me have any "old" lead weights 'cos they are now Toxic Waste. Stone the crows !! |

i've started using the curtain weights cut with an old pair of pliers
works a treat
always thought zinc was a soft metal |

| Health and safety again. I think I will have a look at getting some Curtain weights |

I'm pretty sure zinc is a soft metal. Can only assume these "zinc" weights are really galvanized steel, or plutonium or Nulabourium or something..............they just look like zinc. Nulabourium is, of course, very dense but utterly useless for anything - other than generating hot air whilst emptying your bank account.
May try scouring round the car scrap yards to pry some proper lead weights off old wheels. Does life really need to be this difficult ? |

| Go down to your local aquarium shop (mine's in the nearest garden centre). They sell 'lead' weight in rolls, so you can cut whatever length you need - something like £5 for a metre or so. Should keep you going for a while! |
| Nose weight |
| that sounds better value than the curtain weights Adrian, which cost 50p each |
| Nose weight |
Actually, it's even better value than I thought. I've just measured the roll I have, and I've got more than two metres left I've been using it for more than a year, so the original roll must have been something like 2.5-3 metres. |

I've used fishing weights quite a bit or scrap lead from the metal scrapyard.
To fix the fishing weights I first glue a piece of styrene card inside, then crimp the weights onto the card:

Fishing weights !! Hallelujah brother. You woke up my memory. Used to go sea fishing many years ago; still have my old tackle box in the garage..............somewhere. There'll be the odd kg of lead in there, no doubt. Well done young kitnut. |
