Welcome
The Airfix Tribute Forum was set up for the discussion of Airfix models and other related subjects. Established April 2006.

Am I going mad or did Airfix do a sort of multipacl of the El Alamein german defence forces featuring a completely spurious 1942 desert version of this 1944 armoured car?

I think you're going mad

My little vignette includes Revell's Fallschirmjagers

I can't get to that link but it's all sorta coming back...so the set contained a model of a post-war reconstruction of a 1944 vehicle in a theatre it wasn't in in 1942!

"Constant scale"!

Nice A/C Ratch BTW.

Brave efforts both!

I still think you should do the kit-bash Brews, clone up some fenders and build it as it should look.  I might even be able to bung you an Airfix PAK-40 for the project, as I will be using Blitzes for OSL, but not PAK-40s!

All the best

Ilike the one done by Brews. Heres my efforts.

I made the covered one as an ammo carrying variant.

All components needed cleaning up with excessive ejector pin flash requiring removal, but the kit is well engineered and fits together comfortably. I positioned the driver’s vision slit in the open position. Before attaching the wheels, I airbrushed the disruptive camouflage pattern. I used Italeri transfers, salvaged from my spare decal file. These were applied onto Kleared surfaces with Microset and Microsol, and sealed under Matt Cote. The three crew figures were cemented in position in the vehicle and access hatches were fixed open. The final treatment was with Pro-Modeller dark dirt weathering wash.
Painting Profile:
Xe: 808 RAL 8020 Afrika Korps Tan Yellow = base colour
Xe: 809 RAL 7027 Afrika Korps Sand/Grey = disruptive camouflage
Xe: 505 Tyre Black = tyres
Hu: 67 Matt Tank Grey = scuffing on the wheel arches
Hu: 113 Matt Rust = exhaust pipes
German Army, Captain 334th Artillery Regiment, Tunis May 1943, Army Uniforms of World War II – Illustration 120
This is basically the olive-green tropical field service dress, which had been worn in North Africa since the German arrival. The pith helmet was eventually replaced (completely by the end of the campaign) by the steel helmet.

Hu: 61 Matt Flesh
Hu: 155 Matt Olive Drab = uniform
Hu: 86 Matt Light Olive = gaiters, highlights to uniform
Hu: 121 Matt Pale Stone = helmet
Hu: 160 Matt German Camouflage Red Brown = boots
Hu: 54 Metallic Brass = shell casing
Hu: 21 Gloss Black = binoculars
Hu: 10 Gloss Service Brown = belt
Hu: 82 Matt Orange Lining = insignia
Hu: 11 Metallic Silver Fox = binocular lenses, shell

It a pity that Airfix based their 234/4 on a flawed postwar rebuilt!
I've used Matador models' set and added some bits and pieces on this one. The camo scheme is based on red primer with dark yellow and olive green stripes (very late war pattern?)

well done to all
regards

That's a very nice little vingette J-P. The figures are very good, you can almost feel the cold. The vehicle is well weathered too.

A lovely reworking of the Airfix kit.  What make are the figures?

Agreed, it's a well done vingette.

Figures are a mix of AB and Milicast.
Thank you all for the nice comments and sorry for a late reply.

Smashing vignette.....Your figure painting is excellent and you have done a fine job reworking the clunky Airfix eight-wheeler into a proper 234/4!

All the best

My rendition of the Airfix armoured car.  From all I've read I know its not accurate, but its built OOB but with the 3 colour camouflage.  My first AFV with figures too!  Pictures are possibly a little dark but there's no natural light at this time of the day

The uniforms are an olive drab colour however under the artficial light seem to be nearly grey

That's a pleasingly autumnal camo scheme Corricon - the front shot is most effective.  I bought this kit a while ago to fool around with: might make it my next little weekender after seeing all these builds.

Nice, neat build, well done  Particularly impressed that you got all eight wheels in line and touching the ground at once    I've never managed it
