Hi everyone!
Largely inspired by this forum (OK and partly by the James May documentary a few years ago) I am returning to this hobby after something like 15 years. I used to build almost entirely 1:35 AFVs and 1:72 aircraft with a heavy slant on WW2 subjects. I gave it up as a teenager to pursue life's other interests, but the main reason for having kids was so that I had a good excuse to rekindle the passions of my youth and of course encourage them to carry the torch!
I have a new Airfix project on the way - one of many braille scale AFVs I intend to create - but I couldn't resist digging out one of my later efforts from all those years ago to benchmark against.
Of course it's an Airfix 1:72 Supermarine Spitfire Mk1a, built into a diorama with some Airfix RAF personnel, and a few extra bits. Painted by airbrush entirely in Humbrol Enamels - what else is there? (After years of reluctance I'm finally giving Humbrol Acrylics a try). What I no longer have in time I have recouped in resources and patience, so more masking, varnishing, and use of Decalfix are on the cards.

Thanks to you all for making this forum such a great resource, I have already plundered it for reference, advice and plain old pleasure.

Thanks for all the support above. I'm thoroughly enjoying the return to modelling; here is my latest effort.

Airfix 1:76 Bren Gun Carrier and 6 Pounder Anti Tank Gun
51st Highland Division, Normandy 1944

This is an almost out of the box build. I did however shape and drill the muzzle brake, and leave off the axle/hub covers neither of which quite looked right to me. I also scrapped the half a driver figure. My first effort at tissue paper and PVA tarpaulin is on the back to fill out the stowage. It sort of worked but didn't really shape how I wanted to and I'll be seeking improvement next time.

I went for fairly light weathering on this, with just one dark wash and metal dry brushing. I also added some Hu29 and mud mixed down with a lot of water, but the varnish application looks to me to have made most of that disappear. I'll have to try some before and after shots next time to ensure it's not my imagination, though one of the pictures using the flash seems to have picked this up better. I have gone for a lazy man's vignette just to aid the photo.

More shots to follow in the relevant gallery.

Wow, thanks, praise indeed! Thanks for not picking out the mistakes, though feel free, seriously - especially techniques that I can improve on next time. I'm probably not going to go back and correct mudguards that are too thick  There are some better pictures of the figures in the Bren Carrier gallery - after seeing some of the work in member portfolios I spent a fair bit of time trying to get the figures right so I appreciate the recognition, thanks.

Airfix 1:76 Panzer IV F1 "Europe"
I've always had some sort of weird affinity for the early war Panzer Grey machines. Erm, make that all WW2 AFVs. I like the result of this out of box build, though all of the smaller parts required careful preparation, and as usual the tracks were a pain to fit. Also I don't know what it is about pictures having the ability to highlight errors, but the 3rd road wheel in is out of alignment. Must be going over a bump.

Painted and washed with humbrol acrylics. I do wonder if I took these photos too soon after varnishing and that the varnish hasn't cured - I don't like the way it has affected the way the model looked pre-varnish, but nothing seems to have changed after 24 hours. The rust marks and mud have lost some of their intensity.

From now on I'm taking all pictures using the flash. If you want to see the front you'll have to look in the gallery! http://airfixtributeforum.myfastforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=4003&p=699191#p699191

Thank you for all the support!

In commemoration of VJ Day yesterday I dug out some of my Pacific Air War Airfix kits, probably built around the late 1990s. This would date them to some of my latest kits from my first stint as a modeller, but I'm quite pleased with them considering I'd have been a teenager and they're Airfix so they're joining my portfolio!

The pictures below will have been OOB builds - I've also just read about the new Wildcat and Kate Airfix kits potentially coming out as a Dogfight Double, both of which look amazing compared to these older kits. Finally I'm experimenting and trying to get better photos by going outside...

Airfix 1:72 Vought F4U-D Corsair (02054)
VMF 321, Hell's Angels (831)

I find this aircraft truly beautiful. I should make some more, but better.
Image

Airfix 1:72 Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat (02023)
Air Group 5, USS Yorktown (CV-10)

Not pretty, but by all accounts effective.
Image

Airfix 1:72 Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero (01028)
Early war zero. Truthfully I always wanted a nice white variant. Which Airfix appear to offer...
Image

Airfix 1:72 Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless (02022)
VMSB-231, USMC, South Pacific May 1944 Flown by Captain Bell

If I had this kit again, I would not use the high speed mini-drill to perforate the air brakes... :hithead:

Nice additions :clapping:
By the way, Zeros were never white, it was a slightly green tinted light grey, almost RLM02 (Luftwaffe colour) but if you add a small amount of yellow ochre it is VERY close to the IJN colour. Gunze RLM02 is the closest but as I said it needs a touch of ochre. Testors RLM02 is too light like it is very heavily weathered. Hope this helps :D

WHAT?? Next you'll be telling me that the tooth fairy doesn't exist, or Airfix kits aren't always accurate...

Thanks for the hint though I will avoid making that mistake when I do build one!
