Like many of us I have been an on/off modeller for many years, although I have never thought that I'd left it behind for ever; even in the 'off' periods, I always thought I would go back to it, so everything was kept.
At least in part, the hobby has reflected an interest in the history of motor sport, as a result, the Airfix brand hasn't been as central for me as it is/was for some others. I have had brief periods of feeling a bit queasy about modelling military subjects, particularly ones with crooked crosses on them - just a personal thing, not a crusade, and it often reflected what I just happened to have recently read. In any case I've always been interested in Great War aircraft. Although I haven't built many, I always intended too... More recently, I have tried to adopt a more broad approach, and I have models of robins and Japanese castles waiting for the call to the bench. If it looks interesting, build it; and as Scale Motorsport's motto has it; 'Build Something'. So, with 'warts and all', here is my portfolio. Looking through the boxes, it occurs to me I need to spend an evening or two doing minor repairs and generally fettling the collection, and I've prepared a few to start with, just to make sure, I'm getting things right.

I'll start with one that needs no introduction. I guess most people on this forum have built one of these at some time, mine came along quite late when I was given one of Arthur Ward's books, and the dogfight double kit was included with it.

Well, if it is the dogfight double kit, you know what's coming next....

Image
Yep, it's the 1/72 Me 110

Next is an early build, the 1/32 Airfix Humber Staff Car
Image

A Matchbox Packard, again to 1/32
Image

and the sister kit, the Rolls Royce Phantom 1, showing some excessive 'toe-in' by the look of it, don't know how that happened.

A great start to a portfolio. The cars look fantastic and well painted. The aircraft look great too and yep, I guess everyone has built a Spitfire at some point in time in their modelling.

Thanks one and all for your kind comments.

I had a phase of building almost exclusively 1/20 Tamiya Grand Prix cars, so here is a batch of early ones.

This is the Lotus 78, or JPS Mk III as sponsorship considerations insisted at the time.
Image

Tamiya 1/20 McLaren M23
Image

Tyrrell P34 1976, a bit of guess work on the colour on this one... also the front tyres are beginning to split
Image

Wolf Ford WR1 Took a bold decision (for the time) to paint the gold on this rather than use the decals/transfers. Glad I did.
Image

First of the non-Cosworths was the Brabham-Alfa BT46, the one that (briefly) turned into the fan car later in the season. Before the days of decal softener, no-one was more surprised than me when all the stripes lined up...

Great start. I love old F1 cars, they make me think of my childhood.

The JPS Special was a graphic design classic 8-) and the six-wheeler Tyrrell just reminded me of FAB 1 :P
Thanks for sharing

OK, time to put my money where my mouth is, so here are some updates for the portfolio.
First off, a couple of recent completions.

First is a 1/72 Letov S-431 by Omega Models (MSch 7202)
This is Czech resin kit of an inter-war Czech biplane acquired by my brother whilst on business in Prague, he said he walked past a model shop and thought of me...
Overall it is a little dull as it is plain metal underneath and olive drab on top and there were no decals in the kit, but it was an interesting challenge, even if I did have to leave a lot of the cockpit detail out to get the top on the fuselage, it is only partly rigged as well, and what is there is partly guesswork.
Image

Next up is the better known Airfix 1/32 MGB, (02420)
A set of mouldings that has, I fear, had its day. This has parts from two kits as some parts were beyond use. Hence the improvised radiator grill. I built loads of these as a kid and really wanted to produce my 'definitive' MGB. Guess I'll have to find an original 'red stripe' example on ebay, although they are going up in price; and not everything in a 'red stripe' box is a 60s era kit.
Image

Now a few more 1/20 Tamiya GP cars from the archive.
This is the 1/20 Ferrari 312T3 (GC-2010) from the 1978 season. I painted the white stripe on the front and the white on the airbox, but used the decals on the sidepods, the paint was a big improvement.
Image

Next the 1/20 Ligier JS11 from 1979 (GC -2012)
Image

This is the Williams FW07, also from the 1979 season (GC-2014)
Image

The Brabham - BMW BT50 used for part of the 1982 season ( Tamiya kit no 2017). I made a big mistake with this one, I used Humbrol gloss varnish on the white paint and it turned a rather nasty cream colour; due for a strip and a rebuild I think, if a new decal sheet can be sourced.
Image

This I think is my favourite of the range, the 1982 Renault RE30B. (20018) A lovely kit of the best looking of the turbo era Renaults, and an attractive colour and livery.
Image

The Williams FW11 from the 1986 season (Tamiya 20019)
Image

The Lotus 99T from 1987 (Tamiya 20020). We didn't know much about accurate colours in those days, and my mixture here is way out! Given that the decals are getting badly chipped, this another one that would profit from a rebuild.
Image

Finally for this batch is the 1988 Benetton B188 with its 'challenging' four colour paint scheme. (20021), this project also saw my first dip of the toes into carbon fibre effect decals, paint was all by hand still though.

Very nice paintwork, saying it was brushed on.

Wow, this is sentimental! I built many of these Tamiya Grand Prix cars in my teens! Nice work and well preserved over the years.

Here is my very late Waterloo group build guardsman, some more pictures in the Duchess of Richmond's Ball.
01551 Airfix 54mm British Coldstream Guard 1815
Image

And a few more from the archives.
This is the Tamiya 1/20 McLaren MP4/4; Item 20022 The almost all conquering weapon wielded in 1988 by Prost and Senna
Image

Tamiya 1/20 Ferrari F189 Item 20023
The lovely but unreliable Ferrari driven by Mansell and Berger in 1989. This was one of my first experiments with spraying, here with a Halfords spray can. I used the wrong primer, so the paintwork is incredibly brittle.
Image

Tamiya 1/20 McLaren MP4/5B Item20026
McLaren's 1990 car for Senna and Berger. I was getting more experimental here and the quality suffered. I used the wrong combination of paints on this and it all bubbled horribly; it really was mediocrity plucked from the jaws of disaster I'm afraid.
Image

Tamiya 1/20 Braun Tyrrell Honda 020 Item 20029
I made a horrible job of this, trying to paint the white panels, abandoning it, then cutting my own decals and trying to do the red lining; if it will come apart, I'd like to have another shot at this.
