Heinkel51's build will be reported here. _________________ "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die."

Hmm thinking. Either a Blenhiem MkIV or a conversion of the Matador into a Dorchester command vehicle as per the article in the August 1970 Airfix Magazine. |

The Dorchester sounds like a great idea, I'd like to do one myself but it's just a bit too late for my OSL ideas.....I don't suppose you would have drawings of a Guy Lizard lounging around anywhere would you?
TIA & All the best |

Alas no drawings of a lizard. Considering that there is not much to the Blenheim as an OOB I'll attempt both. |

A check of the stash revealed that I had many moons ago started to throw paint at the Blenheim so I'll rule that out and go for a Henschel He126 B finished as an aircraft from Recon Gruppe 14 Libya 1941 and the Dorchester |

The Dorchester;
The AEC Matador and some sprue shots.
As August has now become suddenly busy I'll only be going with the Dorchester. The HS126 will have to wait for another GB. |

Despite my comment about August being busy ,while looking up the information on how to make a Gauntlet from a Gladiator I came across an article on converting the 88 from a Flak 36 into a Flak 41 and to convert the Sd Kfz in to a SdKfz 7/6 AA Survey vehicle. Should only be a nights work really |

I've made a start.
The conversion begins with modifications to the chassis (part 15). The front and rear tow hooks, the fuel and air tanks as well as the winch need to be removed.
So the part ends up looking like this;
The next step is the construction of stages 11 and 12 as per the instructions, omitting parts 31 and 32;
From here on until we fit the wheels it is all plastic card. |

Some more progress today.
Many years ago I would have spent the day measuring off the card against the drawings calculating the size of each panel.
However while doing some research on paint schemes came across a 1/50 paper model on the internet. Scaled this down to 1/76 and compared the measurements against those by Geoffrey Futter in the Airfix magazine. Within half a mm.
Made a copy and glued on the a piece of 20 thou card.
The first task was to emboss the rear of the card to simulate the rivets.
Then scribe the panel lines the back is completed
Having embossed the rivets the card is no longer flat. So I'm joining up the seams a small section at a time. I will add frames later.

I have to admit to a setback. When fitting the front of the body nothing quite fitted, and having embossed the card to simulate rivets there is no room for trimming.
I suspect that my problem may have been in trying to cut the body as one piece rather that sides, and top separately.
Take two..... |

Well I'm up to take three. I'll post some shots later. Having had a couple of goes at embossing then panels I decided to construct the body out of 20 thou card and then add the rivet detail by embossing and and cutting out the individual panels from 10 thou card.
With a few days to go I best get my skates on!
The main body cut out
Edges bevelled to get a better join
Main body finished;

I have wanted to have a go at this conversion ever since the article first appeared in Airfix Magazine (showing my age here ) but have never quite mustered the courage.
It will be very useful to have a good picture reference of the various procedures outlined in the original article as well as picking up some helpful tips from someone actually building it.
After the initial problems all seems to be coming along well, nice idea to add the panels with the rivet detail from thinner card over the basic shape .
I am looking forward to seeing this completed it may finally give me the push I need to get started on mine.
Cheers

Hi Guys, thank you for the comments. I'll admit I'm making heavy weather on this one.
Think I'm having a patch where I could not cut straight to save myself.
It will be the end of the week before I'll have made more progress.
Apologies to Rich for not completing by the deadline (again) |

Still stuggling, the ability to measure and cut seems to have deserted me.
I have managed to get this far now adding a layer of 10 thou card over the basic structure. Some very ordinary joins here
Hope to have the the basic vehicle complete by the end of the weekend. |
