last week i popped into my local charity shop and couldnt believe my luck when i saw the Flying Fortress( code no.05005-0, cat.no.585) & Short Stirling (code no. 06002-4, cat.no.682) sitting on a shelf for £2.50 each . the boxes and contents seem to be perfect and complete, the tape that holds the lids down was still intact and had gone slightly brown and brittle, although the shop had put there own tape over the original. can anyone tell me the age, i would guess they could be sixties, and if they are worth anything? i have looked around this site and e-bay but couldnt find the correct art work. im not sure if i want to build them or not, but like they say"a kit is for building" _________________ Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. |

Take a look here and see what type of box-art your kits are, then you'll get a good estimate of the age of the kits
Is there a copyright date or similar on the instructions too, that can be a good telling point as to when the kit was produced

If they're red stripe kits and they really are unopened then you might get up to about £30 for each. _________________ circumveniat quod circumiret

am i right in saying i can post pics of the art work ? i must admit ive been very lucky recentley with buys from this shop, so far as well as the above kits ive bought a Tamiya Porsche 959 1/24 for £3 and a Revell Avro Lancaster Mk.I/III for £2.50, all totally complete and in perfect condition. Ive looked for a copyright date on the instructions and cant see anything of any relavance _________________ Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. |

mate, if you have a local charity shop just try and pop in every now and then, the woman in the shop did say that these kits dont stay on the shelves for long _________________ Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. |

I nearly envy you, glen3312
Not only did you get two great kits, but you got two of Airfix’s greatest box-arts as well!
If they were mine, I would for sure keep them.
All the best from Jesper |

A great find at a great price.
They are type 4 boxes which released in the early 70's ... 73 or 74.
Up until a couple of years ago this age/box style was not really collectable and was valued purely because the contents of the box would be an early "crisp" shot from the mould, rather than a 90,s or later shot from a worn mould close to being retired.
However, over the last couple of years, helped by the Heller, Humbrol turmoil, this box style is now firmly into the collectable zone. The B17 is particulary collectable as the mould has long been retired.
They are not going to pay off your mortgage but they would certainly be a great start for a small collection of vintage models.

thanks Radio Gnome you have been a great help, im really not sure what to do with them as im more of a maker than collector, i might think about swapping them them if someone was interested, but only if they were to keep them as a collectable and not make them, will have think about it _________________ Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. |

You could flog them on eBay, and buy the later (better) B17, and there are loads of newer Stirlings about. Then you get to build and someone else gets the chance to collect, everybody happy ! _________________ Pax Britannica

Although I would bow to the greater knowledge of the Gnome, I am sure that I built the B17 in the mid 60s, just after I came out of the RAF, I seem to remember the yellow fin.

Those would be 'Type 4' packaging which would date them between 1972-75.
As those boxes seem to be in very good condition it might be worth E-baying them and see how much you get. Then you could always re bid on later style or damaged packaging if you wanted to build the kits.
-A good find in your LCS!

completely agree- seems a waste of such a good condition box if you;re going to build it anyway- plus- you'll make a fair wodge of cash out of it looking at recent sales! _________________ --.. --- -. . / -.-. .- .-.. .-.. / .-- --- --- -.. |
