The Germans seem to have had a thing with assymetrical aircraft about that time

Indeed. I still don't really get why the Bv141 was able to fly.

It looks odd but actually the layout is entirely conventional, simply asymmetric. Even then the degree of asymmetry is not very great, the engine thrust being almost on the centre line and probably off-set by fixed geometry on the fin. Asymmetric drag from the fuselage frontal area is off-set by the crew nacelle.

The most basic components for powered flight are a wing to provide lift and an engine to provide thrust. As long as asymmetric thrust can be balanced out it doesn't really matter where you position things (up to a point), but machines like the Bv141 look impossible to us because they are defying the normal convention.

My god, two months since I last updated this.  The sad thing is, there's very little progress to show - spare time for modeling just ceased to exist this autumn and things are only just starting to ease off a bit now.

So - transparencies masked and undercoated with acrylic Hu64.  The topside is sort of OK but the seams on the underside are a disaster.  I think the canopy join also needs more work.

Not that any of this can really be seen as I'm down to a mobile phone camera for the next fortnight.

The top really does look good, though. The underside needs a bit of work like you say but it's not like it's an impossible job. It's coming on nicely...

More progress:

I had another go at the underside seams so they're acceptable now (to me, anyway!) and the bird has been in the paintshop this last fortnight.  Some black preshading bunged on, then Hu65 underside, then Hu30 top and this was the state of play this morning:

As of now, the Hu91 has been spluttered on (yes, my ancient Badger is having problems...) and after lunch I shall decide on whether to unmask or to bung another coat of Hu91 on.

And I should be back to decent photos after that too - herself has finally reappeared with the proper camera.

Am now feeling a lot happier about this build now it's been unmasked - I was pleasantly surprised at how it's turned out, especially the join round the cockpit canopy.  Photos below.  As you can see from the closeups, one major fault is the finish of the Hu91 - despite an extra coat I couldn't stop it from producing a weird spotty finish.   Still, hopefully a bit of Klear and some weathering will tone that down.

Looking good and sinister there.  A proper terror weapon if I ever saw one.

Current state of play:

Major decals on and have made a start on the stencils.  The former are mostly the Airfix ones plus a crest swiped from a Hasegawa kit. The latter are also from the Hasegawa kit but reprinted from a scan.

And happily, the Klear cured the blotchy paint finish!

That's really looking good! The blotches were probably the paints matting agent, it can sometimes form a film or blotches on the surface, the application of a varnish dissolves it - I had a similar experience with Hu106.

Right, have waved good bye to the in-laws  so a bit of peace and quiet in the workshop and another update:- I've finished framing the canopy etc with decal strip.  A few bits of touching up are still needed but the photos show the main problem - rather different colour tones to the airbrushed fuselage.  With hindsight, especially on the rear sections of the cockpit, I should have masked off individual glass panels so the finish blended in better.  Oh well.  clearly this plane has had some recent remedial work done on its canopy!

Finished!  I can't see myself ever building another one of these but in the end I'm glad I persevered.  Photos in the gallery.  Thanks to all who commented!

Paul,
An excellent piece of work,  well worth all the effort you put in.
