Now that Christmas and New Year's out of the way here is another ' This Week's Featured Kit'.

The Rommel 1.600

Surprisingly this kit had a run of eleven years, here's what the History says;

Rommel                      F202S/02202-0/9 02202
1/600 scale. Available from 1971 to 1982.
R Humm

It's one of Airfix's 'oddball' kits where it doesn't really go with anything else in the range. It's the only West German Navy ship that Airfix released and therefore it's a sort of standalone kit like the 'USS Forrestal' and 'Moskva'.

I have never seen this kit built, talked about or requested for a re-release. I have no idea if it is accurate or not but like most Airfix ships of this period it seems fairly basic.

Value? It certainly isn't going to make you a fortune. My one was just £4.99 from Hannants' second hand shelf from about ten years ago. My guess it's a bit like a Talbot Horizon -you never see them, but when you do it's going to be cheap!

Here's the sprues and instructions....

Cheers!

Unlike Talbot Horizons, I have to say I've never heard of this one. I may have to have a look in my old catalogues and see if I can find it in one of them somewhere.

A very nice little kit that could be finished as any one of 3 FGN ships. I can remember an article in Airfix Magazine on building Australian Adams class ships from the kit and no doubt there were others.

Neat but in common with other modern ships, somewhat featureless.

Talbot Horizons (were they also sold as Simca's ?) are even rarer than this one. Here in Germany, they are among the most sought-after kits, usually fetching around € 25 to 30.
I'd consider it likely that the kit was done on request of Plasty, as Germany certainly was a very important export market. I think they were about the only kittable subject for the Bundesmarine back then, without going back to the old ex-USN Destroyers of the early years. And I also think they are good companions to Leander and Amazon, and as early 70s NATO ships have a common background.

DaveCov has an Airfix Magazine article on conversion possibilities for this ship. It's quite a good kit, and the interest for me was the conversion to HMAS Perth, which I walked over as a young boy when it was in my local port (Newcastle, NSW, Australia) in the early 70s.

I recently bought this from Collectakit for only £5. I got a Type 5 1981 Palitoy boxing (made in France).
