My second build, the 1980 airfix Mig 23.
Won on ebay for £3.49 including postage, mainly due to the fact that the seller basically slated the accuracy of the kit in the listing! Anyway, Doesn't bother me. Here's the box.
Standard Sprue Shots
Instructions; VERY 80's!

I've made loads of progress on this, but I'm still annoyingly "cameraless" at present. I was promised delivery at the weekend, So I'd hope it'll be today or tomorrow... All the major assembly is now done; just painting decals & a repair to the undercart to go. _________________ --.. --- -. . / -.-. .- .-.. .-.. / .-- --- --- -.. |

it arrived this morning which I guess technically makes me I'm now "cameralessnessless"
I'll post pics tomorrow. _________________ --.. --- -. . / -.-. .- .-.. .-.. / .-- --- --- -.. |

Here's where we were about an hour ago; listing severely to the left as part of the undercart had come off, you can see it lay on the wing in the second photo.
Then assembled the rest of the undergear; probably the meanest looking set of wheels I've ever seen, & definitely the most complex I've ever built.
So complex in fact, I've decided just to plaster the whole thing in silver & paint whatever detail needs doing over it;
That's it for tonight; I'll paint & probably have a pretty decent go at finishing it off tomorrow. _________________ --.. --- -. . / -.-. .- .-.. .-.. / .-- --- --- -.. |

OK chaps here we are; last post before bed.
It's been painted & the decals are on now. All that remains to be done is to give it it's black nose & give it a coat of Klear in an effort to sort out the yellowed decals. They were in a sunny window for 2 months & I couldn;t pick up any remaining yellow by eye; but they have silvered pretty badly so I'll have to see what can be done.

cheers Dan, Job done, Coat of klear did mask the decal problem in most light, but as per usual camera flash shows it right up; most of the time it's a lot less visible. Quite pleased with it in the end; for a jet, it's not a bad looking thing; & it's an excellent kit. I think I'll stick to props in future though!

Nice build George! That landing gear looks a bit complicated! _________________ "It's life Jim, but not as we know it!" - Dr McCoy

It really is, I've been trying to think how it could possibly fold to get back into the fuselage but can't work it out. It's a bizarre arrangement, & It's the hardest part of the kit by far. _________________ --.. --- -. . / -.-. .- .-.. .-.. / .-- --- --- -.. |

Ayup George...
If you didn't ave any Microset and sol, a drop of your Klear would've been ok. all youneeded to do was brush a small amount on the wing and drop the decal on. but not too much or it will slide about. ask me how i know ! then it would've gone on great without silvering... try it again on another jet. you'll get the hang quickly, no doubt !
But well done. another question. what's the flat bit between the tailplanes? _________________ Airfix Member 022... Jolly Boy.

I'd echo that comment about Klear - peebeep filled me in on that little secret, and it's a godsend. Will pull decals down over the most complex shapes as it dries, and pretty much eliminates all silvering.
As far as I'm aware, Stu, the flat bit is another tailplane. The Mig23 has one on the underside too, which flattens out for landing. _________________ Cheers,

Adrian, you're right, you can see it folded over in the pictures above; & It'll be klear next time... _________________ --.. --- -. . / -.-. .- .-.. .-.. / .-- --- --- -.. |

It is a ventral fin which folds through 90 degrees when the undercarriage is extended. _________________ Roger. |

Me too! I remember building one of these many, many, MANY years ago, in exactly the same scheme. Think it was the first swing wing aircraft I'd ever built - was just the coolest thing I'd ever seen! _________________ Cheers,
