Thanks. I'm not a little dubious about the scheme, but it was one of those listed on the Sky Models decal sheet (72-049). There were three FAA Corsairs listed in a grey over white scheme, the one I chose being JT422 of 1836 Squadron, flown by Lt Knight from HMS Victorious in January 1945 - I was attracted by the roughly hand-painted 'T' (the other two were JT427 TRH, no squadron listed and JT410 T8H of 1836 Squadron). I've never heard of this grey over white scheme and the decal sheet's instructions did not specify what grey it was (unlike just about every other colour from the sheet) so I guessed at something like US Sea Grey. I don't know if the scheme is correct - to my knowledge all FG1s and F4Us delivered to the FAA were either in the US-approximated Temperate Sea Scheme, or US schemes and this doesn't seem to match either.
...But I think it's an attractive and different scheme, and it was easily executed with rattle cans which was a necessity seeing as my airbrush went missing in the house move and hasn't turned up yet. |

My take, FWIW, is that as the Temperate Sea Scheme is so low contrast in B & W photos and with fading even more so. Sky Models just assumed that it was Grey overall on top and as Vixens etc were Grey and White they went with that.
JT427 was the aircraft of Lt Col Ronnie Hay DSO & Bar DSC RM who was the Wing Leader 47th Naval Fighter Wing on HMS Victorious. _________________ Roger. |
