I just bought two of the original 1974-1978 issue P51 kits with serial number 02045-9 from e-bay. I was comparing the mould quality with a modern one and it's quite extraordinary just how soft  the detail on the newer kit is compared to the older ones.

I remember buying these kits in Woolworths when I was about ten, it was really nostalgic opening the parcel to see the old style box with George Preddy's Cripes a' Mighty roaring out of the frame, flak bursting all around and a very purposeful bomb heading earthwards. Not like the sanitised PC illustrations we get now.

Quite a few would have been turned out and the tooling suffers eventually. I recall the Spitfire V as being very crisp and clean when first released - especially in the pale blue plastic - but the latest incarnations are looking very much the worse for wear.

Can't say I was ever very keen on the P-51D, it never looked quite right and the canopy is pretty ghastly. The cockpit parts were a revelation in their day and showed that Airfix could do it if they wanted. Now the P-51B kit with the D interior...
