The current state of play.

The top and undersides have had Hu29 and 163 hand painted on and are awaiting the Hu119 and 164 to finish the camo. the undercarriage has been built and painted and will be attached once the major painting has finished.

I applied the medium sea grey camo last night following Freight Dogs camo patterns on the decal instructions and the side profiles did not match up with the patterns on the top profile. I should have cross checked before I started painting because on closer inspection the camo pattern seemed a bit exotic for a Vulcan. I thumbed through Tim Mclelands Vulcan book looking for the Richard J Caruna colour plates for this Vulcan and yes the patterns were different but also different to the rest of the Vulcans in the fleet.

I would show you the differences but I suspect it would infringe some copyright laws.

It will be adapted tonight so it is an amalgamation of both schemes.

Here is the state of play before the Christmas break.

After these pictures were taken Hu53 was painted around the engine tail pipes and the cockpit door and ladder were assembled.
Only decals, a few touch ups to do and a tin of Hu26 to buy and it should be finished.

Looking good so far. The Harrier in the top pic on this page gives you some idea of the size of the Vulcan.

I have used the RAF Roundels from the Airfix sheet (Top) and the rest of the unit badges/stencils etc from the Freightdog sheet (bottom)

The Airfix roundels were the right colour but the stencils were badly printed, blurred and had too much film around each one.
The Freightdog roundels were the wrong shade of red but the rest of the sheet is perfect. A few seconds in the water the decal is ready for application and with no excess film. At 1/72 scale you can read the text on them without squinting.

The Vulcan is now finished but the Cat decided to test the strength of the landing gear which means its up on jacks in the hanger.
Once the gear has been cat proofed I'll post pictures.

Finally finished

Airfix Vulcan B.2 XM607 44SQ RAF Red Flag 77 Nellis Bombing Range 1977

Airfix Kit (Roundals) and Freightdog Models Gods of Fire and Sea decals, Xtracrylic and Humbrol enamels. Xtracrylic varnish. Hand brushed.

Italeri 1/72 Nato Pilot and ground crew set.

And for those of you who have not built one of these and are wondering how big it is. Here is two 1/48 planes riding piggy back on it.

One minor thing, if you're going to permanently display it on that base, the figures could do with losing their bases

Congratulationss on completing the model - that ol' kit is a lot more tedious to build than it first appears! Incidentally, just a small point - paint the fin cap matt black when you can!

Just for reference, the desert camouflage colours were indeed the same as those applied to the Buccaneers (same paint). The best reference (if anyone wants to find it) is an old copy of Aircraft Illustrated which includes a good colour photograph of one of the Buccaneers at Lossiemouth.

As for the kit decals, it's worth noting that with the exception of XM607, you couldn't build an accurate Vulcan for any of the other options. The others are all aircraft fitted with Olympus 201 engines whereas the Airfix kit has jet pipes which (more or less) represent the larger 300-series engines. You can/could get resin replacements for 200-series engines from Airwaves/Flightpath but they're not very accurate. The only good replacements were the old white metal items produced by C Scale many years ago.

I believe Alastair at A2Zee has been planning to produce some new 200-series jet pipes for years now but they never seem to appear... patience is a virtue I guess!

Strange how the Vulcan sometimes looks big but then can look small too. The Aeroclub 48th kit was surprisingly small. Wingspan? Well that's an easy one to remember - 111 feet. In actual fact the Vulcan isn't as big as you imagine. It's the sheer mass of the wing which makes it appear to be bigger than it really is!
