With a bit of preparation for this build, I reckon I'll be building a host of items. I've got quite a few items of rolling stock to get on with but want to build them so I can run them on my layout once I've built it. They'll need metal wheels and couplings and a bit of weight too.

Dapol do bulk spares for wheels (For 20, £7 is a very good price) and conversion kits for couplings (Newer Dapol kits come with the conversions and metal wheels, but the older Airfix ones don't):

I've also got a 9F which Dave has started but not yet finished. I might build it as a BR Black Workhorse. If I can get the mechanisms to run freely, it might do well as a dummy to have with a double header.

I've also got a Pug and BR Railbus which failed to be built for the last Dapol GB. I'll see how things go

I've just had a sort through the stash and have two Lowmacs & JCB's, and a Meat Van that I'll try to build. One Lowmac/JCB and the Meat Van are both from old boxings and the decals are in quite bad shape.

Well on looking further, I've decided on a change of plan. I had original planned to build these three kits - the Lowmac, Meat Van and Brake Van in Airfix boxes...



But the decals, especially those for the Brake Van are unusable. These are the Brake van ones, which have been in the sun for a couple of days. The others have cleaned up a bit better, but these have got worse!



So a change of plan for the time being - I may come back to these later on. I've gone for the Railbus (Park Royal DRB) in Dapol guise, it's a nice kit and mouldings are good - there are a few injector pin marks but nothing serious. Here's a general synopsis of the parts included:





Construction started with the under frame, which is quite detailed



The chassis was then built - which required little work as there are only a few parts needed for it. I then tested the fit quickly with the underframe, chassis and body sides altogether:



I'm know searching t'internet for details on how to detail it internally. There are no seats supplied and it'll look a bit bare without them.

I did used to have a photo of the interior of the German DRB that is based at the NNR (One of the 22 bought by BR in the 50's) which is very similar to the Park Royal DRB. I could only find this photo of it though:

Of course!  

I've emailed Branchlines - to enquire about both the motor and interior kit they do. I wonder if motorising it could be justified? It would make a neat model on my new layout

Another source for motors I've found is "High Level". Apparently, the Pacer motor bogie is a good replacement - look under Bogies and then click on the top left image.

The third option, for going down the motorising route is to use a Lima Chassis from a Continental Shunter - there are a couple on eBay at the moment. With a bit of work on them, such a chassis might fit the bill. It's hard to tell but could work out much cheaper.

I think I'll get the etch interior parts and leave it unmotorised for the time being, but build it so I can easily adapt it to accept the motor kit should I want it in the future The savings on buying them together only works out at £1.50 - hardly a great saving.

I'd agree with that sentiment - on reflection, you might have to build it yourself, but the Bachmann RTR 108s and 105s are now the best part of £80 It's quite an economical little DRB really
