I wouldn't be surprised to see the Hawk take the place of the Spitfire in the sales figures. It seems to have the same sort of appeal for the kids, and it's 'not old fashioned'  either .

Oh well, whatever their thinking behind it, I still think it's a shame that all we're going to get is essentially the old (and not very good) kit with a few new bits - especially when no other mainstream manufacturer is likely to tackle the subject. Think I'll stick with Airfix's 48th kit - it might be covered in ghastly surface detail but it does at least look every inch a Buccaneer!

I think the original Hawk moulds were lost or destroyed when Airfix went bust in 2006, which is why Hornby have produced new Hawk moulds.

It astounds me how something as substantial as a mould can just be mislaid. And why the insurance doesn't pay for a replacement.

jebrook who has good contacts with Airfix confirms this. The old tool had been lost or damaged.

Strictly speaking Airfix did not "go bust", it was the parent company Humbrol that went into administration - at the time Airfix was still a  profitable brand for Humbrol.

Looking at Wonderland Models' website, it would seem that the Bucc is now in stock, but there is no sign of it on the Airfix website and I've had no email from them as a stock notification. So.... what's the truth?      Think

The Hawk was not lost, it just represented the prototype Hawk and as such, lovely though it was, did not represent a current Hawk.

The Buccaneer was 95% remoulded in the 90's to make a current Buc. Since it would only require a few extra parts to make SAAF versions I can't see Airfix moulding a completely new one. But then you never know!

Ayup all...

According to another website, it would seem that they have 'sold out'.  After sending them an email to clarify what they meant, they said that' Hornby had told them they were out of stock for 2009 and it may be available some time next year'. WHAT?! Bam!  Out of stock? How can it be if it hasn't even been released yet?! Who can we rely on for accurate information?
