I am currently trying to make up some rules for my 40k space marine and ork armys.Idea will be very much appreciated as these are very basic. I will write them down into my handmade rulebook.

This is what I have so far:
The Movement Phase
Models/Squads can move up to 6inches per turn.
They may not move through/over other models whether they're friendly or enemy models.
If there is a hill in front of the model it may climb it as long as it is less than double the model climbing. This also apply's to baricades/debri.
Models cannot move through walls unless they are destroyed(same rule above applys) or any sharp things such as barbed wire.

Terrain
Terrain effects what models can move where.
Clear terrain-Models can move across easily.EG-grass land/flatland.
Diffucult terrain-Depending on the size of the model moving, dependson if they can move through. if not they have to miss the rest of his/her's turn.
Impassable terrain-Models cannot at any time move through this, however if it is less than double the hight of the model. If higher they do have the option to go around the terrain in the way.EG-brick wall, bastion.
[/list]

The Shooting Phase
First check range:this depends on the models weopan range. Also,if a piece of scenery taller than the shooter is blocking its sight the model may not shoot.

Second, roll 1D6(1D6 is one 6 sided dice so 2D6 is two 6 sided dice and so on)and check the shooters BS(found in models profiles). If the number rolled on the dice is higher or equal to the models BS it hits.

Once again roll a 1D6(this time to wound). the score needed is determined bycomparing the strenght(S) of the firing weopan with the toughness(T) of the target. If they are both the same you go with what is it.EG- a atackers weopans strength is 4 and the targets Toughness is 4 you need to roll 4 or more.

Saving rolls-The enemy rolls 1D6. The number rolled needs to be higher than the models SV.

Remove casualties.

The assualt phase

In an assault, models from both sides strike in initiative(I) order using their Attacks value.

Stage 1-Pick a unit, declare which enemy unit is going to be assaulted. Both models have to be 6" between each other in order to assault, move both models base to base if they are. If not, do not assault.Carry on until all assaulting models have moved.

Stage 2-Roll 2D6 and compare the two models WS, the number on the dice has to be higher than the 2 comparisons. If they are the same go with how much they are.EG-both WS are 4 so the score needed ids 4 or more.

Stage 3-Compare the atackers strength with the defenders toughness. Roll 1D6. The score needed has to be higher than the 2 comparisons.

Stage 4-Retreat or fight!!! Roll 2D6 and check the defenders LV. If it is the same or lower they pass, if they pass repeat the assault phase but both models swap roles. However if the total is higher than the models LV they fail and retreat. If retreating, Roll 2D6 and add the numbers rolled together. The total determines how far they retreat in inches.

There are ready-made Warhammer 40K rules in a manual.

Get yourself to your local Games Workshop store and they will quite happily explain the rules to you. They are fairly simple when you get into a game. They usually have a beginners session during the week where they give you figures to use during the session while everything is explained stage by stage.

Your not the only one xslayer, sometimes people call it warhammer 40,000 or warhammer 40k. I think they need to make their minds up!

sorry if I sound stupid, but why is it 40k :?:

k is short for kilo (thousand) like km - kilometer = 1000 metres.

Quite why anyone feels the need to shorten the name by two whole characters, I don't know but it's been like that for at least 20 years.

Get Imperial Guard! :D There my favourite team, and there the only real, non-genetically enhanced humans. And there better value than Space Marines, I took out a whole squad of superhuman Space Marines with a perfectly natural Imperial Guard squad and wiped them out with only three casualties in Close Combat :D

its supposed to be set 40,000 years into the future. Hence the 40k.

Hi, I think you're going to find it difficult to actually play the game when most of your opponents are going to be using the G.W. rules & you're not. The rule book is pretty complicated but are your rules going to be any easier (just a thought), but anyway happy gaming.

Jut flicking through the diorama thread and I saw this,  it did make me laugh as I know the proper rules now off by heart :D   And for all you gamers out there (Like me in april) all you need to do is keep going to your local store and study your rulebook and codex, eventually it will stick to you :D
