Thanks for your comments again (and for resurrecting my portfolio thread) :)

Great photos. Do you use panel washes and if so, at what stage do you apply them? Thanks!

I use a watercolour wash to highlight the panel lines Chris, usually applied before the final flat coat.

I tried this myself today for the first time - I've previously used acrylic paints to create a wash but they are often hard to get off the places you don't want them!  Watercolour mixed nicely and comes off easily - do you add anything else beyond water?  I wondered on a touch of washing up liquid.

I'm guessing you airbrush the matt coat on?  I'm dubious of brushing a matt coat over the watercolour wash, expecting it to lift out and colour the matt coat a bit.

You can add a smidge of washing-up liquid to help the mixture flow along the lines. And yes, the flat coat is airbrushed on.

Cheers Mike, I did add a tiny drop of WUL to the mix last night and it did stay better on the lines.  I still struggle to not get it where I don't want it though so it ends up a bit more like a weathering effect than specifically picking out the panel lines.  Practice I guess :)

How do you apply it?  I am assuming it must be a slow job to get it to lie in the lines on curved surfaces like plane fuselage sections as even on the Cromwell I tried it on I have to do top/bottom/left side/right side in seperate sittings.

I just apply it with a fine paintbrush. Load the brush with the wash, touch the tip to a panel line and capillary action will send the wash running along the line, whether curved or straight. When the wash stops running along the line, just repeat the process. Takes an average of about an hour to do a 1/72 single-engined plane this way.

Cheers Mike - I think I'm heavy handed with it, often just brushing it all over the kit so it settles in the lines, but that leaves a faffy job of cleaning the entire kit once the wash dries.  I'm going to attempt this more careful method on the Gnat and see how it goes, I have a very fine brush which I'm hoping will do the trick :)

My current method generally leaves a rather 'weathered' model which is not always the look I am wanting!

Stunning Draken.  The fish on the wing is a nice touch.
