This is two kits in as many months where I've found missing parts.  Am I just unlucky, or does anyone else find this?

My first kit, last year, brand new unopened airfix Tiger I. It only had a few parts but one of the turret hatches was completely missing from the box. Luckily the first has so far been the last.

Tell me about it!

Part of my problem is that I just plow into the kit, and don't bother to check that all the parts are there before I begin.  So when I get part way through and find the missing part it's down tools until a replacement can be sent.

Thankfully, in this case I have the same kit in the stash that I can temporarily canibalise.

Brilliant!

I take it you were able to keep the buckshee sprue for the spares box??

I've built a lot of models over the years.  Missing clear parts or decals was fairly common in the sixties, when I was a young man of single-digit age.  As I returned to modeling as an old far...experienced fellow I got a Special Hobby Firefly with a missing fuselage, a Hasegawa Kfir with two left fuselage halves, and recently an Airfix MiG-15 with no clear parts.

Airfix replaced the clear parts moshi-koshi.  Outstanding customer service.  I took the Special Hobby kit back to Hub Hobby and they replaced it (also outstanding).  The Kfir was an eBay bargain and it has gone on to better things...

I bought a 1/32 F15 Eagle that was lacking the wing sprue! Kind of important for an aircraft. It was more like a heavily armed rocket!

I find that bits usually go missing during a build.

Yeah, I did manage to lose a pilot down the sink once whilst giving a kit a warm, tender, soapy wash!

I am still looking for the missing part of the Lanc, but since it's a rather large bit I think it's unlikely to show up!

My list as far as I remember and are aware of:

Airfix:

Grumman TBM-3 Avenger:  Clear sprue missing. Used the kit as What-if parts.
Arado Ar 196A-3: missing one pontoon bottom. I will make a copy of the other.

Tamiya:
Yoshimura Hayabusa X-1: missing decal sheet. Got perfect help and a new sheet from seller.  :D
Kawasaki Ninja ZX-12R: missing front cowl. Got no help at all from the Danish agent. Built without cowl but it look odd.

Chematic:
Supermarine S6B: One of the bottom wing parts missing. I will make a copy of the other top part.

I once bought a Monogram 1:48 Ju 87D which had a duplicate sprue - containing an extra set of wings and prop. I don't think anything was missing. However, I understand that some companies weigh their packages to help avoid this issue.

Most of the missing items in my kits are entirely my fault. I have an Italeri B-52 with a short-shot fin. That's as bad as a missing part! :)

Not that often but - three times that I can think of (all Airfix):

AEC Matador - flat bed from the rear of truck (fairly significant)

Dakota (BBMF) - decal sheet

Catalina - can't remember the exact number but something like 57 parts missing plus fuselage halves so badly warped that they barely touched (proper Friday afternoon job!)

In first two cases requested and received replacements from Airifx but with Catalina I took it back to Hobbycraft and they replaced it without question - even let me open up the box of the replacement to check parts before I left the shop.

So three in 40 years of modelling - not bad I suppose although all three occurred within about 18 months of each other but the most recent was over two years ago.

Not a common occurrences but it does happen.  I currently have a still-sealed bag of parts for the DH Heron as found in the Civil Aircraft Collection that has no clear parts with it.
I need to get onto Airfix about that actually

Not too often these days.
Most recent was half a funnel on a Revell 1/570 Titanic.
Most of the others are short shot or badly moulded: only one of 4 in a strip of lifeboats; u/c legs on a PM Fury; the canopy of my Airfix Aichi 'Val'.... a few others.

I would agree that this happens less frequently than in days gone by. Last time it happened to me was with the Airfix Pe2 kit.
