Hello members of ATF, i am 19 and from the north east of england, just a few mile away from newcastle. I used to make airfix models when i was about 10  - 13 years old, and in that time the hobby got rather out of hand!

I used to make any WWII aircraft or armour in 1/72 scale, and i had a ridiulous amount of models, and considering i was only young they werent brilliant

I used to make the models with my grandad, he would apply the decals and do difficult gluing of things etc and sometimes i wouldnt even go out on a saturday with my friends to play football because i found it that interesting  :D

When i turned 16 and bear in mind modelling had been forgotten over 3 years ago, my grandad asked me what to do with the 100s of models around the house, spitfires, bf-109s, B-17s, lancasters, shermans, basically you name it, and it had a shelf

Being 16 i said, BIN THEM! because at the time i never thought i would ever come back to modelling. But oh how wrong i was...

On 7th may 2012, my grandad passed away   :(
And it was probably the worst moment of my life, at 76 i felt he was to young to die, but unfortunately i had no say in who stays and who doesnt :(

When the time came to eventually clear his room out and just generally tidy cupboards, rooms and the loft, i found a box of old airfix kits! not finished kits, like brand new and still unopened he had unwillingly binned my 100s of finished models when i thought i new too much, but i had the base to start the hobby again. And if i wanted to do anything to remember that great man, its this!

They were some of the best moments of my childhood, and i will never forget them  :D

Sorry for the ridiculously long post, but i just wanted to give the story as to why i am back to modelling at 19  :D

Hello and :welcome: to the ATF!

Sorry to hear about your Grandad. At least when you make models you will have great memories of your time together. I look forward to seeing posts of your completed models. My Grandmother used to buy all my models for me when I was a teenager (and got yelled at by my parents for spoiling me). I certainly think of her often as I model now. My 'break' was a lot longer than yours though!

All the best,

Hi and welcome to the ATF. Building some models will be a fine tribute to your Grandfather.

Wow this forum is rather busy  :D

Thanks for all the replies people  :Clapping:

The models i found were mainly Hasegawa, these were an M3 stuart light tank, a german Sd.Kfz 251 Ausf. D halftrack (not to sure i threw out the box)   a Kubelwagon and a couple of flak 88s

So with this i decided to buy some armour and make a diorama, not knowing what to get i bought the first things i seen which were italeri quick kits, 2 shermans and 2 tigers and there nothing special :(

12 pieces to make each kit

I have finished the shermans and the stuart light tank, along with the kubelwagon, so il have to get some pictures up once i learn how

Once again thanks for the welcome guys, much appricated  :D

:welcome: to the ATF, twinport53. To get your pics up, first thing you need is a photo hosting account, something like Flickr, Google Photo, Photobucket, etc. Let us know if you're having any probs. Good luck,
Alex.
