Looking forward to this group build.
Not quite sure which scheme I''ll be using but probably it will be the S&M decal sheet SM72-179 Western Airways/British Airways. Also today I have sent an order to Aeroclub for some fine rigging thread.
Had a flight in a DH89 Dominie in wartime years as a ATC cadet, so, for me, this build will recall memories of those exciting days.

Just getting ready for tomorrow's kick off.
Here is the kit, the box, the instructions, decals from S&M 72-179 (from the Aviation Hobby Shop) and the rigging thread from Aeroclub.
Big decision later on will be which of the two decal options to use.
Just now it may well be the all blue, G-ADDD, Western Airways one.

I really like the BA 'Negus' scheme. Really unusual and you don't see many white rapides.
I could make you an offer if you're never going to use them! _________________ If you can't Dodge it, Ram it!!!!!!!! |

Thanks BAC,
I'll bear that in mind. Both are very attractive schemes.

A little progress has been made and here are the fuselage sides with the transparencies fitted. I decided to go for a light blue inner(Hu65) for this model since the Western Airways G-ADDD is a dark blue finish. The clear parts have so far been 'glued' with Klear but I will try to supplement this with some ZAP cyano later.
The seats and cockpit assembly went together well. I decided to paint the seats leather Hu62 with black arm rests. The headrests are from Tamiya masking tape punched out with a leather punch.
Painted the floor carpet and bulkhead light blue. Looks quite good I think. Just a little touching in with black and light blue paint will complete this part of the build.
Hoping to get more done this week. Enjoying the GB so far.
Further reports to follow.

Looks very nice Ron
I suppose the nice thing about the Airfix Rapide is that the interior can be done in any scheme looking at everyones build!
I want one!!! _________________ You must listen to what the baked potato say.....

Have just tried a preliminary test fit of the of the passenger cabin seats/pilots seat in the right hand fuselage half.
Perfect fit!
Also I have applied a little ZAP cyano to the windows using the point of a scalpel blade and have got away without any clouding of the clear plastic!
Nothing cemented here yet.

I have joined up the fuselage, filled the seams with Plasto and sanded it down. Gave it a coat of Klear also.
The lower wing piece has had the two engine nacelles added. The fit of these parts was quite good.
I definitely get the impression of this low-winged Dragon Rapide having a striking similarity to the Percival Q6 Petrel.
Next job is to add the tailplanes and tail wheel, then the canopy which will be masked off as will the side windows.
I intend to cement the struts to the upperwing and locate them, without cementing, into the lower wing halves. When they have set (probably leave them overnight) I will remove the top wing and then paint it separately from the rest of the assembly.
I will then be faced with rigging the model, a feature that I haven't done many times before. So it will be a challenge.
More later

Hi farmroad38,
Regret no progress at all except that I now have some Hu15 midnight blue for the airframe. The CH46 Sea Knight has taken me over recently also!
Next week I hope to be able to complete the helicopter and get back to the DH89.
Best,
Ron. |
