Hi, hope all is well for you.

I am current building this :

http://www.airfix.com/airfix-products/s ... le-a10170/

The painting is mostly complete now however I would like to add a tiling effect to the underside, similar to the below :

http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=space+ ... 9,r:12,s:0

Would anyone be able to recommend a way of doing this as I am at a loss of where to even begin!

Cheers

I think a decal company produced a decal set to do the tiles, I can't recall which one or wether they are currently available. There was a build in last months Airfix Model World, I'll see if I can dig it out to see if it was mentioned there.

Failing that, then you are down to cutting out lots of same size squares and then applying them and painting various subtle shades of colour over them, like this build of a submarine with anechoic tiles;

There are a couple of the specialist space companies that produce the decals you require. A quick google should throw up the goods but I know Real Space models do them.  To stop them looking uniform light weathering with a light grey in the tile centres and more of a gunmetal towards the edges should help.

Cracking kit the Airfix shuttle the detail could be a bit better but outline is spot on, its the best 1/144 shuttle out there.

I was looking for some myself, JBot list Space Shuttle Decals, but no details as to whether these are tiles http://www.jbot.ca/space/shuttle.shtml Real Space don't seem to do the tiles. There are a few Decals for the SRB on that sheet that are not on the Airfix decal sheet that I might be tempted by. (Although neither do a decal for the "Teardrop" tiles on "Discovery"  http://realspacemodels.com/html/decals.htm

Cutting Edge did do them but they are  no longer trading so not so easy to find cheaply.

Also read that a guy called Ed Bisconti sometimes has some on ebay.

Given that my orbiter is going to be on the stack I think I'm just going to no worry too much about it.

Must say that looking at all the various builds on the net etc, I've got to agree with Arpie, this is the best 1/144 Shuttle.

(Edited to get the links to work, thanks Jesper)
