Hi all, could anyone advise, I've become interested in making a detailed model of USS Enterprise from the original series with Captain Kurk and spok, Having spent a fair proportion of the christmas Holiday watching the new boxed set on dvd with my 12 year old son Harry. Does anyone know a good kit to recomend?

There are very few kits. Theres the old AMT/ERTL kit of NCC-1701. Polar Lights do a few different versions of the original Enterprise. Revell do one but I think it may be the AMT kit. AMT also do a 3 kit box of 3 different Enterprises, including the original. Plus there's a 3 kit set of Enterprise, a Kligon Battle Cruiser and I think a Romulan Bird of Prey. The kits are in the £25 to £60 range.

I would recommend getting the Polar Lights 1/1000 kit. Wonderland Models has it for £22.99. It might be a bit cheaper to buy from Starship Modeler in the US. They have the kit for $18.95.

If you have deep pockets, there is the Polar Lights 1/350 kit. Wonderland Models have it for £179.99. Similarly, it might be cheaper from Starship Modeler, which has the 1/350 kit for $124.95.

Avoid the old AMT kit, the fit is awful; mine has been sitting unfinished for around 15 years

Revell kit is an original Revell tooling from 2011, to 1/600 - AMT's 1960s vintage kit is 1/650 approx. HTH.

The recent Revell kit is supposed to have shape issues but the build review that I read said that it went together OK. I have the earlier Polar Lights 1/350th NCC1701-A movie Enterprise in the stash & it isn't for the faint hearted & masking the Aztek pattern looks scary (they gave decals for the Aztek in later releases). The recently released 1/350th TOS Enterprise may well be an easier build though as you don't have to worry about the Aztek pattern on the hull? I haven't seen a review of it yet.

Another vote for the Polar Lights 1/1000th TOS Enterprise from me. I made one a few years ago & it is a nice build. Also another vote for giving the AMT kit a miss.

Caution; the site is a bit slow to load sometimes, and you may find some of it's content controversial...

cheers,

If you decide to build the 1/350th scale original Enterprise then you might want to look at this..

http://home.comcast.net/~johndavidcook/delux-spinner.html

They also do other lighting kits for other models here :

Hope that helps..

The AMT kit, builds into a nice replica out of the box. Yes its flawed, but it was originally tooled in the mid 60's, and you have to appreciate it for what it is. This is mine from last year build OOB with just the addition of grid decals from Aceation decals

If you want to use this as a basis for a super detailed kit, Federation Models do upgrades for alll the areas of concern, and I have a complete set of their upgrades which I will use on my next one.
AMT also did a cutaway version in 1:537, which was bad as a cutaway, and bad as a static model. DLM do an upgrade kit to make it presentable which is well worth the money (sorry can't find my pictures of this one)
The new Revell one is a great size but is let down by its heavy grid and panel line detail

The 1:1000 kit is a little too small for my liking, but has the saving grace of having all the parts to make the original pilot, second pilot, series and Mirror Mirror versions straight from the box http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/ ... 060138.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v470/ ... 060140.jpg

The new Polar Lights 1:350th kit is apparently the best of the best, but at £150+ I'm not going to find out personally!!

The Polar Lights kit was £30 when it came out. Someone is profiteering.

No, the new one only came out in November mate.
http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/POL880

And thats just the basic kit. They do upgrade parts to add another ton onto that price

Your probably thinking of the 1:350th refit Enterprise that they do. That was about £30 on its first run, but its now closer to £100 because they include a full set of azteking decals

well thanks again for all this information, I decided to go with the latest offering from Revelle, as it seemed to me to be the optimum option balanced with post christmas, post MOT cash flow. I'm looking forward to doing a detailed build of this on my WIP thread.

Any box that has Bill Shatner on the front is worth owning!
