I've wanted a model of the Reaction Engines Skylon spaceplane for a long time but at nearly sixty quid on Ebay it was something that remained on my wanted list. Then I went to the World Science Fiction convention last year and listened to a lecture by Reaction Engines managing director Alan Bond. At the end of the talk he mentioned that the British Interplanetary Society had these on sale for twenty quid. He also thought it would be great if Airfix would make a kit of Skylon.

Construction is two parts, wings and fuselage with a two part display stand. Model is 13" long.

Wings look tiny but that's only because the fuselage is huge. The wing span is 25m, about the same as Concorde, but the fuselage, at 82m, is 20m longer.

The C1 version has been superceded and the current planned version is the D2 which they hope to have flying by 2025. Assuming everything goes to plan they hope to build and test the SABRE air-breathing rocket engine in 2017-18.

Models are available from the British Interplanetary Society for £27 (£20 for members) ... n-engines/

US Fighters project. Built - 22. Budget £220. Spent £187.91
