Revell/Monogram 1:48 North American F-100D Super Sabre (85-5317)
56-3321 494th FBS, 48th TFW, Weapons Team, Chaumont, France 1958

Here we have the Revell re-box of the 1980 Monogram "Hun". It's not a bad kit at all to be honest, the open panels would require a little attention if it was to be built with them shut or with the wheel bays shut, but I didn't so happy days. The tail plains being an integral part of the lower fuselage is not the best idea I have come across but not an insurmountable issue. A little flash in places but as is the case with Monigram kits of this era the internal bay detail is quite nice a pops with a little effort. Again brush painted (apart from rattle can white) with Aquacolors and Humbrol Decalfix and Clear used. A little Flory dark wash on the guns and crewman.

Now to get the Kittyhawk Starfire finished.

Lovely clean finish, I really like the burnt panels at the 'hot' end.

That's beautiful. One of my favourite aircraft, the 'Hun'. Massive afterburners, you got that scorched effect perfect.

Very nice, I love the way you have managed to show the heat discoloration on the bare metal panels around the engine.

Thanks guys, it's the first time I've come close to getting the heat colouration right.

How did you do it? That 'burnt end' is almost a signature for that particular aircraft. I've got an Italeri Hun for a future build in natural metal. Any tips?

A bit hard to explain but I'll try. Firstly I used Revell Aquacolor which give quite a good metallic finish and thin with water.
I started with a base colour which was a mix of silver, bronze and Anthracite. Being Aquacolor it dries in about ten minutes, I transferred some of my base mix into another two pallets and addded some black to one and white to another. With the darker of the colours I applied the darker stripes which I blended in with the lighter mix which had been thinned further. I further mixed the colours together and thinned them further to blend the tones.
After leaving these to dry for a while I used some red and green mixed with silver which was thinned a lot so it was virtually transparent and used these to blend the hues a bit more.
I finished with a blue/silver mix thinned a bit first to add a few furs there stripes which were again blended in with the same colour also thinned to virtual transparency.
Hope this makes sense, try it on something first and best of luck.
