Why I haven´t started a W.I.P thread I don´t know...so...better late than never. :)

First up, a dark Ages Diorama.
This will be a semi permanent one..ie; it is to create a Scene that will exist in photographic form and not as a stand alone Diorama.

First the Basic construction. Base made from foam Sheets glued with PVA and then toothpicks used like nails to secure each layer firmly.
River Banks shaped with a craft knife.
Image
Modelling clay (the Basic sort from art and craft Shops) added to hide any gaps and form the river bed.

Rough paint job with cheap acrylic wall paints
Image
Test shot to see if the river colour fits to the Chosen Background. It does near enough ..and later additions will help disguise the join
Image
The unpainted patch is for an additional Piece of scenery

Thanks chaps :)
Forgot to add the that dio will be in 1/72nd scale
A bit more done.....A bit of scenery added (small Stones from the garden, home made trees and some moss) and a fig and a Barrel placed to test eye lines. The fig is a converted Emhar Saxon Warrior
Image
Work on a Bridge...coffee stirrers cut to shape, the uprights stuck into the polystyrene, the horizontal pieces glued in place with PVA. I won´t bother to paint the pieces before they are added..the undersides won´t be visible anyway.

More bits and pieces added...the trees help give depth and hide the cross over from dio to background Picture.

Image
Then it struck me...I added a couple of figures and...not only was the Background Picture not really wide enough but the actual area on the dio wasn´t big enough.
Basically, as I´ve already mentioned, the dio isn´t going to a permanent fixture (it will get stored and used elswhere or later the pieces will be re-cycled) so adding a couple of flat surfaces to the left and right was no Problem.
The Background??. This turned out to be easier than I first thought..all I did was mirror Image the original pic, print and use the outer thirds and add them to the original. (the river is visible to the far left and right on the backdrop

Nice one! I like that idea of using a picture as a background.

Keep up the good work.

I forgot to add it won´t get painted with something to make it shiny. Why? It´s a trick..one of the "what the eye sees or doesn´t see but invents".
I´ve nearly finished and will take pics later when it´s all set up and then I´ll add a shiny surface. It will demonstrate why it´s sometimes better not to try and be too realistic.

Thanks :) I´ve got an A4 file with loads and loads of Pictures for Backgrounds. It takes a while searching to find a Picture that fits to the intended Scene /dio, then resize it and print (or from magazines, old calenders) so i like to Keep hold of them for possible future use.

Thanks :D
The dios finished but I can´t put up any pics for a while as (after a request)they might end up in a Magazine which might mean some other pics being taken so, in respect to the author they are at present being kept under wraps.

Another timber framed house...a "made up" one not based on anything.
Materials for this stage, Pizza box, pen (black is best) and set square
The plan of the house with all four walls. The side walls haven´t had the beam pattern added entirely as the house will be attached to another house on one side (and possibly both sides)
Image
Close up of the house front.
For 1/72nd it´s best to Keep the height of the floors between 3 -4 cm´s. Doors Maximum 2.5cm´s high and 1.5 wide. Windows?...if they Look ok sizewise.. then they probably are.
Aesthetically, it looks better if the window ledge starts at around 1.5cm´s above ground Level
This house will have two 0.5cm jetties (the floors that stick out over the floor below) and they will be constructed by simply leaving a gap (the strips with the arrows) between each floor. When it´s cut out I simply score along the lines and bend each into an "S" (I´ll take a pic later)
Important to remember the jetties Need to be taken into account when drawing the side walls, and to take off the 0.5cm´s per jettie (1cm) when calculating the height of the side walls.
Example, front has three floors @ 3 cm´s + 2 jetties @1cm = 10cm´s
The side walls (if they aren´t to have jetties as well) will be only 9 cm´s high in total.
The "T´s" represent the Tabs for glueing each wall to each other or for attaching the Roof.
The "squiggles" are where the doors and Windows will be cut out.

The front cut out, scored and bent into the "S" shapes to create the jetties
Image
The Tabs folded and glued. A tip..the shiny side of the Card glues easier after a quick rub with fine sandpaper.
Image
The side walls attached. I don´t attach the back wall yet as it makes adding the Windows difficult. They get put in after painting.

For this one, yes. After building a few I´ve got a bit of an "eye" for what Looks okay. The first lines are drawn without any pressure so if they aren´t in the right place I can draw over them (can get a bit confusing though) then when it all Looks okay I go over them all again pressing a hard as I can so it scores the pattern into the Card.
For the houses based on real life buildings I make "plans" using pictures of the real building, like this "plan" for the Medieval Guildhall - Thaxted.
Transfering the sizes can be a real headache and is more based on guess - timation than anything else.

The last stages.
Painted. First I paint the Areas between the beams, then the beams. The Paint is normal acrylic based wall paint with a tiny pinch of talcum powder to slightly thicken the paint
Image
Next..Windows. Bit of flyscreen cut to size and sellotape over the back. For Windows with a "Frame" in the middle (top left of pic) I add a smear of PVA to the middle.

Back wall can now be added. Now the Rooftiles/shingles. 1 cm wide strips marked off every 1/2 cm and then the Corners snipped out between each tile. A Mind nummingly boring Task.

The tops tiles are made with a 1cm wide Strip marked off every cm, then scored down the middle.
Image
Before I paint the Roof I add the Dragon post Ends and the Dragon beams. All made from Strips of styrofoam

The chimney. As the houses sometimes get joined together it means the roofing can´t always be finished until the next house is ready and attaching the chimney isn´t always possible so I create a handfull of chimneys at the same time.

Materials, high density polystyrene, the brickwork scored with a pen.
Image
The doors. Scored Card, dark Brown base, dry brush with light Brown. I make up the doors in strips and cut off sections as needed as it´s easier than scoring and painting each door individually
Image
and the finished house.
