Painted the black bits on stage 1 and the interstage as made a start on stage 2. Copied off internet photos of Apollo 11 as the painting guide is wrong. Airfix got the new box art right, shame they didn't pay the same attention to the instructions.

Yes I noticed that about the box, the artist must have had better references.  Great start on the markings, they are not as easy as they look.

Careful use of masking tape and a good brush are essential. I use Americana acrylic, which is the best black I've come across. It's also possible to scrape off the excess with a scalpel before it hardens. Back to finish stage 2.

One thing I didn't notice before, although it's not a big deal ... The F1 engines on the first stage were wrapped with an insulating material that fairly obliterated all detail. This could easily be simulated by wrapping the engines with aluminium tape. Alternatively, you can get resin replacements (waste of money IMHO).

Stages 2 & 3, with the black bits. Trying to get a straight edge on a curved and corrugated surface is challenging.

Painted and assembled, just needs the decals.

You could try aluminium tape as a mask, or even Tamiya tape, but spraying with the basecoat before you put your top coat on will help elminate seeps under the mask.

Finished at last, apart from getting the A,B,C and D markings on the right fins took a couple of goes.

and stacked together.

Not quite as impressive as the 1:72 Dragon kit they've got on display in Holborn Modelzone. But big enough.

Looking great! I had one when it came out, and remember it was about one meter high.
Yours are looking 100 times better than mine ever did.

Jesper.
