Have got the Italeri Vought A7D under way. Just wanted to check that underside colour call-out for an aircraft in tan and two greens is white rather than the light grey. I've 'googled' it, and it appears white to me! For those who are into detail the tail code is MB and the serial number AF70952 (355th TFS, 354th TFW circa 1972). If I hadn't got this forum within which to seek guidance, I'd use white, but why not check!

Anything is possible but I'd strongly doubt that it's white. That "camouflage gray" was a very, very light gray. But it's not white. The correct color would be FS36622.

Same aircraft in a 1978 photograph here:

Compared to the white code letters it was definitely grey... in 1978. :D

Check first this camouflage scheme.
If you can find it use Testors/Model Master 4766 for Camouflage grey.

Thanks all!

I'll stir the pot of FS36622 and slap it on!

I am familiar with the use of this grey [gray] with the tan and two greens, but as the kit said white and the piccies I saw via the web looked white, I thought I'd ask.

Interestingly, a close look at photos of the finished model on the box does show a light grey was used. But I can't say I trust Italeri.....

@inkpen - All my references for the SLUF-D say "normal SE Asia colours" until we get to the introduction of schemes like "Europe 1", which is an overall scheme.

It's received a coat of Humbrol 28 now, possibly too deep a grey but I can live with it. I see you've used the 'SLUF' monicker. I remember buying the Matchbox kit, the write-up provided explaining SLUF meant [look it up!] not every word of course, but the meaning was clear to a twelve year old! The Italeri kit adds and extra F and accounts for the acronym as standing for Short Little Ugly Fat Fellow! Hey ho!

Yeah, Humbrol 28 (Camouflage Grey) is my choice for the US SEA scheme on 1/72 scale aircraft. It's just the right off-white tone, I find.
