Hi, I've just opened an Airfix Evening Star loco kit and inspected the colour references for the green. It states 'British Rail Green' but no Airfix (as the kit's that old)or Humbrol colour refs. Anyone know the correct Humbrol colour for the BR Western Region that should be used, (if in fact they make one)? In the Prairie Tank loco kit the Western Region colour ref is G5 mid Brunswick Green  equating to G3 in Humbrol... is this about right as I've heard refs for Malachite Green. If there are other paint manufacturers who make the right colour I'd be grateful to know... preferably in enamels... thanks very much for any help  :help:

According to this forum British Railways Green is also known GWR Brunswick Green. Apparently Humbrol 3 is a good match for this.

GWR Green is a good match. Alternatively, both Precision Paints and Railmatch do BR Green's and a whole host of Railway shades. I'd also recommend replacing the BR crests in the kit with aftermarket ones if you are going to be building the kit too - these are availible from places like HMRS and Fox Transfers.

Malachite Green was the colour of Southern Railway locos, and totally unsuitable for a BR Class 9F  :geek:

BR 9F's were all in BR Black, with the exception of "Evening Star" (The only named 9F) which was in BR Green

thanks for help and I'll check out the alternate decals as the ones in the box are possibly a bit far gone... Is there a suitable Humbrol match for Southern Railways malachite green as I've got a Biggin Hill loco on the list to do.... thanks again

I don't think so - nothing is as vibrant in the range, again Railmatch or Precision will do this.

Hi all,

Sorry to reopen an old threat but thought this one had best go in here rather than start a new post. Whats the colour of the Standard Class 2 in 'Oh Dr Beeching'? I can't tell whether it's BR Green, Malachite Green or Maunsell Olive Green, and I don't really know the difference between them all! I'm new to railway modelling and thought it would look good on the old BR Mogul, but I can't tell what it is. In addition, are the Humbrol Railway Colours any good? I'm umming and arring about getting BR Green and Malachite Green in preparation for the Railways GB but maybe there are better ones out there?

If its a BR Standard Class locomotive it won't have been painted in Southern colours  :naughty:
It'll either be BR Green or black
