Hi all I got the London icon set for crimbo and just started the yeoman of the guard only to find the red which comes with the kit is gloss so now I have to paint it again. All the other models in the kit are painted with the same colour so is this a mistake or is it normal I think for the rest of this build I will use my own colours for all the models. If this is not a mistake I have a bigger problem as I have the Aston Martin DB5 the RAF red Arrows Hawk and Icons of British aviation set. All of which I will have to buy paint for.

You could put a Matt Varnish over the 19 Gloss Bright Red

It says on the box and on the little paint tub 174 so I recon it must be a mistake if gloss red is 19 but yes I could put matt varnish over it, it just makes me wonder if the other model sets are the same and is matt varnish good I ask cause I have never used it normally I would buy the paints required for the kits unless I already have them, I just assumed the paints in the kits would be correct.

Hi I have checked on the humbrol site and 174 is supposed to be satin red but it is definitely gloss so I think I will use another manufacturers colours. If that is their idea of satin (I have to say I am a bit disappointed with humbrol)

Hi all relative newbie to this site been modeling a long time but just got into plastic again I have had a rude awakening into how bad my detail painting is I have started the airfix beefeater and started the gold but have ruined it completely.(I built this model as a yougster and as I remember did a pretty good job of the detail) i don't understand how I could have got so bad, it must be because my scratch building uptill now has been on such a large scale can anyone give me any tips (I don't think my eyesight is what it was).

Ken, you don't say how it went wrong (some pictures might help)
There's lots of advice about airbrushing and brush painting - did you wash the plastic - did you prime (with what) - what paint did you use - how did you apply it - we're not sitting at your shoulder and the more information you can give, the better the advice is likely to be

I had the same problem trying to keep the painting of the detail neat. Actually, it was a right pain but I got there(ish) in the end:

I didn't use the paints that came with the London Icons set. The red is H19 Gloss Red and after this photo I applied matt varnish to some areas such as the clothing.

Thanks. :thumb:

I used a No2 brush and masking tape and took a very long time spread over quite a few sessions!

Thanks for that so did you mask of all the red and black then paint the gold that must have been painstaking work.

Yes, it was painstaking. I painted it red overall, masked up for the black painting and then masked again for the gold. Some of the black and gold had to be masked and painted more than once!
