Evening all...
I've recently acquired an old US Army BDU jacket, and I'm curious about the insignia on it.
The badge on the left sleeve is 'Tropic Lightning' 25th Infantry, and the left collar 4th Cavalry, I believe.
So we have 4th Cav., 25th Infantry...but what's the black mark stitched on the right collar?

Any ideas? Couldn't find anything on the web, but I'm sure some of our military-minded ATFers will know...

Thanks Fred - that sounds about right. Black background indicates 'Staff'.
(Red is Artillery, Cavalry is Yellow, Blue is Infantry and Buff for General Staff)

That is a subdued 1st Lieutenant bar. The 2nd LT was a gold bar and so would have been subdued brown. See this link:

This is a link to the site where the images on the other link came from: http://usarmyinsigniahomepage.co.nf/armyhome.html It is a great reference site for all things US Army insignia related, historical and current. And this is the official US Institute of Heraldry's site that shows all the current isnignia http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/

Can someone help identifying the rank insignia on the collars of this 1969 dated jacket. It's 9th Infantry Div., Rangers, Assistant Command Staff. But how about the rank? Brigadier General?

The insignia is the subdued cloth versions of the rank and branch of service. The oak leaf in black on the right collar is that of a Lieutenant Colonel, a major would have the same leaf but in a dull gold. The star with the eagle on the left collar is that of the General Staff branch of service. The badge the above the left pocket is that of a Combat Infantry Award and to get this you must meet all three of these criteria
1.Be an infantryman satisfactorily performing infantry duties.
2.Be assigned to an infantry unit during such time as the unit is engaged in active ground combat.
3.Actively engage the enemy in ground combat.
Hope this helps.
