there was an Eric Sykes sketch where His co star Hatty Jaques tells Corky the policeman that Eric is in the bath, when asked how long he'll be she relies "quite some time, he's up there recreating the Battle of the Pacific and when the water gets cold he'll be doing the Battle of the Atlantic." cut to Eric in the bath with what looks like an Airfix Lancaster shooting down a kiel craft BF109, then he get his toe stuck in the tap....

The sketch was a colour re- make of an earlier black and white show from the 60's. Both clips are on "you tube"

Only just seen the reference to Eric Sykes and Corky the policeman.  For the benefit of our younger members the actor who played Corky was Derek Guyler and he was well known in the world of Wargaming.  He was one of the founder members of the Society of Ancients and was made Honorary Life President.  If I remember correctly he was an expert on the Roman army.

I was just listening to a Chris Evans podcast on my way to work in the car this morning. I think it was recorded last Friday and is mostly an interview with Rod Stewart - who we all know is a keen railway modeller.

He said that when he's travelling or on tour, he carries two large suitcases of modelling stuff with him, including kits, tools, glue and paints (so presumably he's into making plastic model kits for his railway) for whateve his particular project of the moment is and that hotels know to give him a second room that he uses as his modelling studio. How brilliant is that????!!! It's his therapy to wind down, much as it is for the rest of us.

He also said that there were three other 'dabblers' in (presumably railway) modelling - Jools Holland, Roger Daltrey & Neil Young.

So it's not just me that rolls up to the hotel with an extra bag full of modelling gear!  :D  Having an extra room so you can set it all up properly is a bit swish!

I'm guessing that if you're Rod Stewart, it's a Presidential suite for sleeping in and a room for modelling in.

That it is, Adrian, but then I suspect his bank balance is more conducive to such luxuries than you or I, even with whatever alamony he's paying the various ex-Mrs Stewarts. I suppose I might be able to run to such arrangements if I could get a Premier Inn on one of their 29 quid deals...

How times change. All those years ago, the separate room would have been for the other sort of model. :D

Never knew that about Rod Stewart. I know that Ben Ando ( news reporter) is a big N gauge railway fan.

The Reverend Richard Coles (formerly the Communards and Bronski Beat) has just mentioned on Saturday Live Radio 4 that he used to build Airfix kits when he was young. He mentioned building an Airfix Messerschmitt 109 E - did Airfix have an 'E' 20 years or so ago, or is he mixing his E with a G? The programme ran a piece about model engineers and requested that others with interesting hobbies contact them.

There was the 1977 1/72 02048-8 and the 1971 1/24 1202/12002

Al Murray (The Pub Landlord) on BBC2 last night, saying how he used to go to Duxford to make sure he was getting the colours right on his Airfix models :geek:

Al Murray may lean in that direction. If you watch his 'Road to Berlin' series he talks with a knowledge and passion about the hardware that 'smacks of the nerd', as the wife says.
and there we have it :airhead:
