one step closer..

The pre cut masks dropped through the door this morning.
Image

A first time experience for me... tried fine tweezers but found that the pointy ent of a number 11 scalpel blade was the best carrying/positioning tool
[Image

It certainly saved me all the tedium of applying and trimming tape . They were ordered on the 17th, delivered on 21st direct from Poland (the ebay seller is UK based?) all for the princely sum of £1.99 and £1.50 postage. A 'no brainer for the future if they perform well under paint ...

Those masks look similar to the Montex brand of vinyl masks. They are cheaper than the ones made from Tamiya-style tape, such as Eduard. I also apply mine with a number 11 blade. I did find that when I used the vinyl masks, they tended to stretch a little more than the tape masks.

Hi Jonny, yes these are vinyl and seem to be a good fit, the proof of their worth will be in their paint fastness and ease of removal :D

after a slight delay the lighter tone was repainted with a better match and the darker of the two upper surface tones was then applied

This will get the underside painted, glossed and decaled tomorrow.

Today saw the underside painted. I tried a match from Vallejo but didn't think it close enough so a quick nip into town saw the purchase of a H157 azure blue, the stated colour.... not really convinced that this is a good call, it strikes me as too dark... any thoughts guys and gals? I may well revert to my vallejo colour

Image

EDiTED ADDITION

Discovered conversation on H157... will go with plan B and mix using Humbrol 'recipe' . 157 will be put aside for PRU Blue

Good progress today :D

The broken aerial and all four guns were rwplaced with cropped steel pins, the aerial was rigged with some cotton

I mixed a batch of azure using the 49,10,1 recipe from the Humbrol paint book but used Vallejo model colour White, Dark Prussian Blue, and black respectively. Two coats were applied over the H157 and are much closer to the desired colour. The entire model was given a couple of coats of Kleer®

This is now ready for decals and washes

tonight saw the decals applied ... though I notice I have to still put the 'eyes' on :o
Image
Image
microsol ensures that the decals sit into the relief and will pick up any washes
Image
The 'F' was an 'E'...white on white was hard to trim , still nothing that a touch of colour won't hide. just the tail flash to trim, general touchup, apply a wash, clean canopy, and matt varnish all over. Then just the base to install and we will be there :D

Tonight saw the base finished... and the aircraft get its second matt coat. The prop spinner was modified and painted and the prop disk was made with the tip 'colour blur' added.

Image

Disk cut out with compass cutter, spun on fine grit paper and then mounted over a washer to stop smudging while rotating by hand as the brush is applied (that would be by the hand holding the camera :D )

We are in sight of the finishing post with this build now.

Today saw the spinner split around the prop mounting holes and set to sandwich the pop disk.

Image

This will need a little touching up BUT it will get mounted tomorrow!!!!

Today was so close.....
    •The 'eye' decals were applied
    •The spinner was touched in
However, the main progress today was the finishing of the main part of the base;
Image
with the wind in the right direction this build may finish tomorrow ......
