Messerschmitt Bf110C of 235 Squadriglia, Regia Aeronautica.
Flown from Lonate Pozzolo during early 1943.
Image

Only three Bf110s were flown by the Italians: Werk Nummers 964, 1358 and 1804.
Between them they flew 649 hours as part of the Luftwaffe trained RA nightfighter unit.
Image

The 235 Squadriglia was eventually equipped with Do217Js, and it was with one of these that Italy's only nightfighter 'kill' was made.

Here's my contribution to the GB, the 1/72 Komet:

OOB however I did allow myself to drill out the wing root cannons and reposition the pilots head looking to the right.

You just dont realise the number of variations in the Me109 until such a GB as this creates so many schemes. So much to like about each individual model, particularly the colours.

Interesting Me110 Ian, didnt realise that the Italians even attempted Night Fighting.

Lovely little Me163 Steve, I particularly like the dabble colouring down towards the sky blue.

Nice contributions all round lads and, Pabbi :thumb: :thumb:

Messerschmitt Bf110C of III./Zerstorergeschwader 76.
Possibly flown by Helmut Florenz prior to 4th September 1940.
Image

Yes folks, ten minutes of research online and information falls apart.
ZG1 ceased to exist on 22nd June 1940, I Gruppe became I./Nachtjagdgeschwader 1.
II Gruppe became III./Zerstorergeschwader 76.
It didn't reform until 4th January 1942.
Image

Oberleutnant Helmut Florenz was shot down on 4th September 1940 in '2N-DP' of Stab III./ZG76
Image

I can't find anything alluding to the origin of these 'Wespen'.
They don't seem to be present on I./ZG1 aircraft prior to June 1940. Not those of Falck and Wandam anyway.
So were they just used by II./ZG1 and then retained along with the '2N' codes when they became III./ZG76?
Or was this a move to prevent the 'Sharkmouths' worn by I and II Gruppes from wiping away their original identity?

The three 'Wespen' seems to have developed into the single large insect following 9./ZG76 becoming 6./Schnellkampfgeschwader 210 in April 1941.
Zerstorergeschwader 1 then received the nose adornment when Gruppenstab of SKG210 was used to reform it in January 1942.

Messerschmitt Bf109F-4/B, NN644 of 1426 (Enemy Aircraft) Flight.
Flown from Collyweston between October 1943 and January 1945.
Image

Werk Nummer 7232 was part of 10.(Jabo)/Jagdgeschwader 26.
As 'White 11' it was flown by Unteroffizer Oswald Fischer on 20th May 1942 during a shipping strike of Newhaven.
Image

The aircraft was hit by machine-gun fire, an overheating engine and no hope of getting home, Fischer made a belly-landing near Beachy Head.
The aircraft was quickly taken by road to Farnborough for examination.
Image

It was alloted the serial NN644 on 20th January 1943 for possible flight tests, but was not made airworthy at the RAE.
NN644 was transferred by road to 1426 Flight at Collyweston on 23rd August 1943 and flown for the fist time on 24th October 1943

Decals from H Models Decal sheet HMD72021: Captured Bf109s in the RAF Part 1.

Rafwaffe! That's funny! ...and a nice build as well!

Airfix 1/72 Messerschmitt Bf-110 C-2
Zerstörergeschwader 26
France, June 1940

The Bf-110 was developed as a heavy fighter, escort fighter and fighter bomber. It had initial success in the early campaigns but soon suffered heavy losses when engaged with modern single seat fighters. The replacements for the 110 were developed as early as 1940, but they never matched the abilities of the aircraft and the 110 continued to fight on through the end of the war in various roles. Zerstörergeschwader 26 was formed in early 1936 and fought in Poland and the Battle of France. After taking heavy losses during the Battle of Britain, Zg 26 was re-quipped and fought in the Mediterranean theater and eventually Russia. The unit fought in the 110 until 1943 when it was re-equipped with the Me-410.

I picked this kit up for $0 but it did not have the main gear and was missing the decals. I used an old set of Superscale decals to mark the model as an aircraft used in the Battle of France. Painted with out of production Aeromaster paints, the older decals silvered a bit. I created one of my standard display bases using some line images and mounted the aircraft on a brass rod.
