I came across these very nice carriages tucked away at the Weald and Downland museum http://www.wealddown.co.uk/ which is well worth a visit.

They have manufacturers plates (I have pictures if anyone is interested) with dates of 1914 and 1917 (from memory) so the certainly looked original. I would be interested to know what the markings mean on the sides of the carriages. Anchor and Explosion.

That third one in the row is indeed a vetenary horse/mule ambulance

Second one is Australian 5th Division. The "expolsion" is the "rising sun" emblem.
