Today I got a collection of old HO/OO Boxes first issue 1960/65. One of the boxes are the "Arabs/Bedouins"with a nearly complete set of figures. Surprising the colour of the Arabs is like greygreen or olivegreen. Until today I only knows the set in white, cream, tan or orange-colour. Knows anybody something about this green Arabs??? :)

Green Arabs could possibly have come from hat. They had the moulds for a while. It's not at all uncommon for later production figures to end up being stuffed into an early production box.

I believe HäT always received their stocks of Airifx reissues from the Heller factory in France - thus HäT Bedoiuns would all be that rust orange colour.

I suspect Zaferburnu has a truly unusual set here. Most of the sets ever made were probably made in cream, followed by orange, I don't know great quantiities were made in white or tan. Airfix olive green Bedouins must be the rarest of birds.

Hi All:

The tan ones came out first in 1965-I remember getting them on my 8th birthday. The colour was fairly quickly changed to white which showed up in the first and second version boxes. This was supplanted by cream in the short lived 73 year or third version box. Orange was used by hat, but Airfix also issued them in 1994 in the Fort Sahara reissue. I can't recall the colour used here. Olive green is certainly unusual and I've never seen it in a first version box-but as I've learned, that doesn't mean it can't have happened.

There is a Fort Sahara set up on ebay at the moment with a set of orange arabs on the sprue and what appears to be additional pieces of arabs in a light olive colour. It's on ebay.com item number 320479010239.

Thats the later release of the Fort Sahara set. I had one in the late 1960s with the original tool Foreign Legion, and the Arabs in that were moulded in cream. In fact, just like this one:

I'm looking a bit more closely at the venerable Airfix Arabs with hopes of using them in a Foreign Legion scenario and also in a Lawrence of Arabia WWI context - and am noticing (I suppose I always sensed this) that there's apparently more than one type of outfit on display here. Some are certainly in the flowing Bedouin robes pictured in the artwork (fine for Lawrence but not really against the Foreign Legion, unless I decide to go with the Hollywood view of things), whereas others are in a flat-topped head-dress wrapped under the chin that looks more like the Berber style (better against the Foreign Legion). All the men on foot appear to be Bedouins but some of the mounted men look much more like Berbers. Did Berbers and Bedouins ever fight alongside against the Foreign Legion? Maybe Airfix were being more subtle about uses for these figures than most of us realised! :notworthy:

Anyone else notice this or know more about such things than I do? :?:
