Hi all,

I recently returned to scale modelling after a 25-year hiatus and joined the forum for hints, tips and like-minded pontification. Here I'm documenting my progress in roughly chronological order since the restart. Hopefully, some improvement my be detected. For comparison, I *may* try and get a few photos of extant models built as a lad...

Some braille scale for openers; the first kit I (re-) attempted was the Airfix AEC Matador and 5.5" gun, 1/76:

Swiftly followed by the Airfix 25-pounder Field Gun and Quad, 1/76:

Next up, the Airfix 40mm Bofors Gun and Tractor, 1/76:

Airfix Bedford QLT and QLD, 1/76:

Airfix Cromwell IV, 1/76:

Revell Sherman Firefly, 1/76:

Airfix Tiger, 1/76 with Hat German Tank Riders, 1/72:

Airfix Crusader, 1/76:

Thanks for looking!

Very nice...

That Revell panzer 2 must be the old Matchbox kit??? I remember building the base up with the ruined house... IIRC the Matchbox Sherman firefly came with a ruined bridge.

Your builds look great.

Superb work! The Mickey Mouse camo on the QLB/QLD and Quad is really good and all the figures are amazing. A great start to your portfolio! :clapping:

Thanks Gents,

your comments are very kind and are very much appreciated. The ATF's portfolios have been a great source of inspiration to me during these builds, and I've learnt many new techniques (drilling out barrels, glazing, washes, ...) from you all while perusing them. I've still got a lot to learn (subtle weathering being one of them), but if I can achieve anything like the finishes I have seen here then I shall be well pleased. Ntrocket - your QLs are a case in point: bravo sir! Johnnz - correct, these Revells are indeed Matchbox repops and <shame> I forgot to put the Firefly on its bridge for the photo. I have to admit I have a real soft spot for those dioramas and have a pile in the stash.

More recently, I've also turned my hand to glossier beasties:

Airfix Triumph TR4, 1/32:

Image

Built in a hurry for Father's Day, so please don't look too closely at the headlamps...

Airfix Red Arrows Hawk, 1/72:

Image

Not a quick build this one, it took about 3 months from start to finish. All fun though.

Hope you enjoy!
Piers

I had a bit of a struggle with the gloss finish initially (see my WiP), but I think it turned out OK in the end. Thanks for looking!

Thanks for the comments folks, they are much appreciated. Here's this summers's work...

Airfix 1/72 Supermarine Spitfire PR.XIX (A02017)

Image

I picked this kit up cheaply at the Duxford MAFVA show in June and have been working at it on and off since then. It's been an enjoyable build encompassing some firsts for me: airbrushing, panel pinwashing and... ...poor decals. I couldn't get them to settle, even with copious application of Microsol and Microset. I was going to strip them off and use some aftermarket versions but then I thought, hey, it looks OK, I'll probably mess it up even more - I'll let it be. A post-application of Clear initially helped, but a white bloom appeared around the edges of the decals upon drying. I guess this means that I have been spoilt by Cartograf!
Seeing how I enjoyed the build, I bought the aftermarket decals anyway, and another PRXIX to try them on...
More photos in the PRXIX thread here and in the Flickr gallery here. Thanks for looking!
