Here's a Monogram 1/72 P-51B Mustang in the markings of Kidd Hofer.

Image

The "Salem Representative" marking is from Authenticals (from 1967!). The other markings are from the decal stash. The colors are custom mixes. I used Tamiya gloss acrylics and Vallejo Metal Color to paint it. The scheme represents what I see when I look at a black and white picture of Hofer's Mustang. The tail stripes all look red to me, and anyway it looks cooler that way.

An "in flight" model is easy to do from the old Monogram kit. It has an excellent pilot figure and a nice stand. I removed the prop blades to simulate a spinning prop. This looks more real (to me) than a clear disk or a photo-etch "blurred prop." Canopy is Falcon vac-form. The antenna is a sliver of bamboo. Bombs are from the Hobby Boss Thunderbolt kit.
