I've had this issue with other hobbies; photography, archery, cycling, and now with modelling, the £50 rule!

I just can't seem to go into a hobby related shop without spending £50, it befuddles me everytime, and today I can't work out how I did it... I only went in for a look around, but ended up with another kit, some paints, brushes, more gloss/satin/matt cote and a drill!

That's it, the cards are being put in my wallet and then stapled shut!  Surely I'm not the only sufferer or this curse?

The curse doesn't hit me on that sort of amount but on tins of paint.
I go in to look at whats new and end up buying some more paint. I have almost all the Humbrol range [ many x2] plus loads of Revell and Tamiya!

Oh, it's dead easy Kae!  I went into town on Saturday and must have spent almost £50 on modelling related items and I didn't even buy a kit!

It is just too easy with cards and the internet !

I went to my LMS on Saturday and ended up with 2 more kits - reason why not sure

Browsed eBay last night and now waiting on a seller to send revised P&P for 4 items

Soon it will be "NO MORE KITS" !!  Made 6 kits since March and still no more then 5% through the stash I didn't even have 2 months ago

Try modified cars, there is no chance I could limit this to £50 a go in some cases :)

Hear, hear! That's how I got my 1/24 Mossie. A few clicks and I had spent roughly £125.

It feels like it sometimes, but I don't have a posh car in my store-room.   :rotfl:

I found the same thing with fishing, although it was £40 for some reason. I'd go to the tackle shop for a couple of pints of maggots and maybe a rig or two (no idea why, I'm perfectly capable of making my own up) and emerge carrying a small plastic bag the contents of which had just lightened my bank balance by 40 quid. The result of all this is that when my mate decided he wanted to take up fishing again I discovered I was able to fully equip us both for a fishing trip and still leave gear at home in the garage. Looking at that and my model stash and a pattern seems to be emerging....

The answer is simple- just walk out and buy elsewhere- they will soon get the message if it happens a few times.

If you only want to spend £10 and have no cash then they will accept your card if they really want your money, all it takes is the backbone to refuse such retail robbery.  I have never had such problems with any LMS.

LF - I think the thread is about self-imposed £50 limits  :D

Maybe lots of LMS's DO have £50 minimum spend rules, but most of us have never noticed!

Lancfan.  I think Kae in his OP was saying that he finds it strange that he always seems to spend £50 whenever he goes into his LMS and not that they won't accept card payment for less than £50.  If Modelling Shops do that, it's news to me bacause I've never had that problem.

I read his OP that way because he says ...

Kae wrote:

I agree that the first sentence may look like it is a complaint about a £50 card limit, but in the context of the rest of the post, I think Kae is just as bemused as the rest of us how 'popping in' for a tinlet of paint leaves us £50 poorer with three more carrier bags to lug around!    I'm sure you know the scenario well!

As for me ... ebay is the one that gets me every time! :fear: ... But thank goodness for it! :blob:

Sorry LF, I'm agreeing with Alan
If there is a whinge in there, it's Kae whinging at himself for not being able to resist temptation  :D
