Okay all, I'm getting a headache here. I've been trying to find info regarding Dornier's Do-17 Es or Fs being used on the eastern front, during or after the start of Operation Barbarossa, and I'm drawing blanks concerning any definitive insights. HELP!!! Simply, was the Do-17 E or F used during this phase of the war? I have found several "suggestions", concerning F variant recon aircraft "around this time", but nothing solid about when or where. I'd like to add mine to the Operation Barbarossa GB. Yes, there is an underlying motive here.  :geek:

IIRC, the E had been retired by the outbreak of war and there were only a few F's involved in the invasion of Poland
Here are the notes I made at the time of my build
Nicknamed the ‘Flying Pencil’ when unveiled as a high-speed mail plane for Lufthansa in 1934, the Do 17 E-1 became the militarised version, with the Do 17 F-1’s seeing action in the Spanish Civil War. The airframe went through a number of modifications, (M, P, U & Z). The Do 17 Z’s and earlier variants took part in the attack on Poland, but by the Battle of Britain early Dorniers were fast disappearing. By the invasion of Russia, only KG 2 and KG 3 were still using the Do 17 in the bombing role, but these were withdrawn by late 1942.

As ratch says, DO17Z with KG2 and KG3. There is a feature on Operation Barbarosa in Junes edition of Fly Past. I have it if you want it.

You could always have a go at converting it to a Do.17P, like this:

http://www.modelingmadness.com/reviews/axis/luft/attarddo17p.htm

Actually I think most of that conversion is Revell/Monogram.....But you get the gist!

Just a thought, all the best

Some fella did a Do17P in this thread. I'm reliably informed that the Airfix fuselage and tail were used in its construction

Thanks Howard. I'm afraid that I'm not familiar with Fly Past. Is that a publication of some sort?

Yup, Fly past is a historic aircraft magazine published by  Key publishing.

Well, that's cool Howard, but I think that I'll probably build this bird OOB. I really do like the engine arrangement on it; that was one of the selling points for me. But thanks so much for your consideration mate. 8-) Maybe I'll post a "work in progress" thread with it. :)
