Don't like the look of those Methane showers on the horizon though...  :airhead:

That's barmy, not balmy!

How do, Stu!

You're not wrong about Jaglan Beta, mate!  I left my leg there!  It's cold enough to freeze a squirrel's nuts well and truly!

And you're right about the 'Slanket'.  It's a euphemism for 'straightjacket! <a href="http://s1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff397/alancord/asmileys/?action=view&current=crazy.gif" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff397/alancord/asmileys/crazy.gif" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I'll tell you what though, mate. ... At least that padded cell is toasty warm!  :D

Here's a pic of a classic chinook arch, this side of it it's fricking cold (for this time of year), but the sunlit side it's a good 10-15 degrees warmer.  Chinooks only happen in a couple of places in the world, this is one of them.

Wow!  That's a new one on me, kitnut!  I've never come across that phenomenon before!

Here, when it's cold, it's just flipping cold everywhere.  Mind you, I've been in a street where on one half of the street it was raining and on the other half of the street it wasn't raining!  Well, I suppose rain has to end somewhere!  :D

BTW, it is getting pretty cold up here now!  Oh the joys of winter! ... Thank goodness for the 'Slankets' - that's all I can say!  :D

Chinook Arch or Arc, could be either.

The Chinooks around here are a warm Pacific air flow coming from the west and across the mountains and where it contacts the Arctic air flow from the north creates these cloud formations.  The Arctic flow side is thick with cloud and really cold but the Pacific flow side is really nice balmy warm weather.  At the boundary of the two air flows, this very distinctive arch or arc appears and usually runs parallel with the mountain range, it can run for hundreds of miles too. They can appear anytime during the year but are most noticeable during Fall, Winter & Spring.

And what you see is much like what's in the photo.  The dark area on the bottom side is shadow as the sun dips behind the mountains.  In some instances, especially during the winter, it can be as much as 20-25 degrees different in temperature depending which side of the boundary you are on.  And you can feel it within a mile or so.  Also it only appears on the east side of the Rockies, so BC doesn't get this but they do get the warm weather

Is this then the ('banana') shape from which the helicopter gets it name?

The US Army names it's helicopters after Native Indian Tribe names (also known as the First Nations People), Chinook is one of them, so no to your question.

Whereas the Chinooks around here are a type of Salmon. Speaking of which, they're about to swim upstream ...

Hi Bruce,  was it another good year for the salmon run?
When I was over last year the papers were saying it was the best one for over 100 years.

Around here, it should have just started. The salmon swim upstream when it starts raining. That's their signal. November is the big month at Goldstream for Chum salmon, then the eagles feast on the worn-out fish in December.
